Here in dry Southern California, some native plants have adapted to our Mediterranean climate by fruiting and flowering in winter when more water is available. Manzanitas form dormant flowering shoots at the end of the previous year's spring growth that remain dormant until the next growing season, where they act like a "big toe testing the water" (Dr. V. Thomas Parker, Calflora Database) for moisture availability.

Got my first little red berry and so excited to try one!! Not being a green thumb and really never having an interest in growing anything, I have really enjoyed watching this little thing thrive.

The schools in my area seem to have a positive impact on shaping future environmental leaders. My school age children and their friends seem to have a strong awareness of the challenges we face, and the positivity sustainable actions can make. Volunteering, donations, and encouraging the staff are my ways to support the children and the educators.

Yes! I remember badgering my parents about recycling back in the 80s, and now my kids are so much more informed about climate science and how the world works.

Are you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?

I am neither unfortunately. I never had the time or developed a green thumb and plants I was given would suffer a slow dehydrated death! But I was recently given a small fruit plant (strawberries) for my Birthday. And I must say, I am a bit obsessed with it. It has become very relaxing and fun to watch the little berries develop and since it is my favorite fruit, I am excited to see how they will turn out.

Yes! The obsession will turn your thumb green - it's a trial-and-error process IMHO!

So relatable! I've always joked about not having a "green thumb" when it came to plants. But surprisingly, the new garden we decided to plant this year seems to be defying all my past failures. I'm staying cautiously optimistic and crossing my fingers that this lucky streak continues! Glad to see you've found some excitement in yours too!
