Eric's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

I read through the learning for the "dishwasher efficiency" action as I've been on the fence as to whether or not I'm doing it wrong. From the article:

"However, there’s a silver lining for resource-savvy hand-washers. If you happen to have a two-basin sink, filling one basin with hot water and the other with cool water, and then soaking and scrubbing your dishes in the first and rinsing them in the second — and then letting them air-dry — was the least energy-intensive method out of all the techniques the researchers tested. The two-basin method only produces 1,610 kilograms of emissions over 10 years. Adopting this technique leads to a 249 percent reduction in emissions for people who wash dishes manually."

While I don't have a two-basin sink, I do not leave the water running while washing each dish; instead, I quickly rinse all the dishes in hot water, turn off the water, lather them all, then rinse off all the soap at once in cold water, turning the water on and off after each dish so that I can put each one away to air dry. I don't usually use that many dishes so this actually saves me time and I think it saves resources as well. If there is a large load that will fill most of the dishwasher, then I will use it on its efficient "smart wash" mode.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

We cannot assume that clean water will be in unlimited supply and basically free of charge. Taking stock of our water use and eliminating poor uses of water (such as leaving the sink running when washing dishes) will conserve this precious resource for all.

We all are responsible for common areas, and keeping spaces clean can help keep them clean (broken windows theory). However, just picking up litter does not address root causes for how it got there (supply of waste; no bins).
