  • Reflection Question
    Industry Practice the 5 R's
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

Although for some products recycling is rather simple (e.g., paper, cardboard, glass, and types 1 or 2 plastics), most items still have a mixture of components and of rather small size to recycle.  Reduction and reuse still are the most direct ways to reduce environmental polution.
  • Reflection Question
    Industry Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Francis Staskon 4/26/2021 7:36 PM
It appears that alternatives to cement are few, especially for large scale construction projects.

  • Reflection Question
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

I think to make real progress on alternative refrigerants we need  quick and substantial investments to  produce greater availability in the markets.
  • Reflection Question
    Electricity Calculate My Carbon Footprint
What stood out to you most about your carbon footprint? What surprised you or sparked curiosity? Where can you take most immediate action?

    Francis Staskon's avatar
    Francis Staskon 4/19/2021 1:17 PM
Found I was 47% less a foot print compared to my zipcode with one method or an ecological footprint of 5.4 compared to US average of 8.1 (also some 40% less).
  • Reflection Question
Electricity Choose Renewable Energy or Purchase Renewable Energy Credits
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I'm glad several towns around La Grange voted to go green last year and not offer alternative electric providers to COM Ed as a default.
  • Reflection Question
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

The importance of methane released from biological processes is greater than most people realize and a real challenge to addressing climate change.
