Gayle's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 90 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 300 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Try a new vegetarian recipe

I will try a new vegetarian or vegan recipe and share how it turns out on the Ecochallenge feed, or with family and friends.

Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

I found that I had to plan out my day very carefully to have a zero-waste day. Food packaging, household products, medications etc. are all ways this would be a hard activity to sustain, however, I know others have been successful. I plan to continue to learn how I can work towards zero-waste days multiple times a week. This is definitely a challenging activity!

Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I went to the gardens at the university campus today. It was absolutely beautiful. They had various gardens such as a rose garden, shaded / Hosta garden, kids garden, oriental garden and many others. The benefits of being outside were seeing beautiful plants and flowers, hearing birds singing, hearing and watching the multiple waterfalls throughout the gardens. It was very relaxing. Benches were tucked away in shaded areas to sit and enjoy nature!

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

The hydrochloric acid in cleaners goes into water and creates a more acidic environment which is detrimental to ocean reefs and ocean life. I have changed to using lemon juice and baking soda in the bathroom. It has worked very well. I have also researched using small amounts of vinegar in cleaning. I will continue my research for additional cleaning alternatives. This action has helped in changing my use of chemical cleaners!

I attended an online class on permaculture. A wonderful idea I learned on the session was regarding the "No dig method permaculture" for those with very hard soil/clay or builder buried cement, bricks, rock, etc. The idea to layer organic materials on top by cutting down existing vegetation, adding a layer of rich compost, a layer of cardboard, a layer of rich soil and a layer of mulch and plant, then repeat the process again in the future! In time, this process will leave you with an incredibly rich no dig base for regenerative landscaping!! Definitely do away with a lawn and go native plants! What a beautiful new landscape and water conservation!

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Gayle Senn's avatar
    Gayle Senn 4/07/2024 7:40 PM
I learned our family is lower than the average on water usage. I still see where we can continue to adjust our water usage going forward as well. It is good to do the water footprint calculator to help remind you of areas that can be improved.

Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Gayle Senn 4/06/2024 8:23 PM
The benefits of regenerative agriculture are so important to our future. We have farms nearby that utilize regenerative agriculture and we will be supporting them. We are also going to keep learning more about how we can add regenerative agriculture to our gardens.

Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

    Gayle Senn's avatar
    Gayle Senn 4/03/2024 4:17 PM
Building a weekly meal plan has helped me keep on tract using the food I purchased based on each day's meals. It is easier to know what I am having each day without the challenging "what are we having for dinner tonight" looming each afternoon. I can see creating a meal list with grocery items for a month worth of selections would be extremely beneficial. I am sure there are apps available to help as well! Then being able to make selections of meals for each day will be easy and a ready-made grocery list as well. An excellent way to reduce food waste and save time!!

I started my day today outside enjoying nature. Spring is in full swing here in TN, and you can smell fragrance in the air. The daffodils have been blooming and they are beautiful swaying in the breeze this morning. The sounds of birds singing makes you look up and smile! Tree leaves are returning and waving a rich green hello with the breeze. It is a beautiful way to start the day!
