Community and Connection
Explore My Area
Discovering what’s nearby fosters a deeper connection to my community. I will explore 5 new places in my area, such as parks, historical sites, or local businesses.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 10 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Land, Water, and Air
Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 3 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Community and Connection
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Community and Connection
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community and Connection
Share Information about Local Resources
Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Wildlife
Log Species to Help Scientists
The more we know about the wildlife around us, the better we can protect species. I will download a wildlife monitoring app and log 5 animal or plant species I discover.
Community and Connection
Keep My Community Clean
A clean community benefits everyone. Each day I am outside, I will pick up 2 pieces of litter to keep my community clean.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Land, Water, and Air
Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 20 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Sustainable Innovation
Support a Crowdfunded Sustainability Innovation
Small contributions can drive big ideas. I will support a crowdfunded sustainability project to help bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to life and share the project on social media or on the Ecochallenge feed.
Health and Well-Being
Replace a Product
Small changes can make a big difference for health and sustainability. Using what I learned from auditing ingredients in the products I use, I will replace 5 toxic or harmful products I use with safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
Health and Well-Being
Prepare for Extreme Weather
Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.
Sustainable Innovation
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
When companies and governments make large-scale changes to their products and practices, it makes sustainability more accessible to the masses, in turn creating further demand for sustainable products, and the cycle continues. I will advocate for improved, sustainable food packaging through petitions, letters, or by supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly packaging - and share my advocacy actions on the feed.
Sustainable Innovation
Invest in the Future of Sustainability
Sustainable investments shape a greener future. I will research and invest in companies, funds, or projects that supports sustainability, such as renewable energy, green tech, or sustainable practices. I will share more about who I supported with others on social media or in the Ecochallenge feed.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 10 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 20 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 25 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Empowering the Next Generation
Support a Youth-Led Project
Youth-led projects drive innovation and change. I will support youth-led environmental projects by offering time, resources, or encouragement and share how I supported youth on the Ecochallenge feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 2 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Wildlife
Donate to Support Wildlife
There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeWhat did you learn about how tourism impacts wildlife, and how can you make more conscious choices when planning a trip? How do you think your travel decisions can contribute to wildlife conservation and respectful interactions with nature?
Delaine Spangler 4/17/2025 5:05 AMI'm a big traveler, and I always try to be cognizant of the places I'm visiting, especially since lot of places around the world are deeply impacted by tourism. I don't usually go to the tropics, but when I do I will start to bring reef-safe sunblock and make sure I wear clothes without microplastics that can seep into the ocean. -
Delaine Spangler 4/17/2025 4:47 AMwe're over halfway through! Keep it up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you do to prepare for extreme weather events? Share any tips or resources you found helpful in the feed!
Delaine Spangler 4/16/2025 11:18 AMI packed a go-bag and set it in an easy to access location. This is something I've always had for emergency scenarios, but it's been long overdue for an update. I packed it with a spare set of clothes, water bottles, emergency cash, and charging cables, along with some other misc necessities. Hope I never have to use it, but you never know-

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat resources did you discover, and how do you think they can benefit your community? How did sharing this information make you feel more connected to your community’s needs and opportunities?
Delaine Spangler 4/16/2025 4:39 AMI worked together with a friend who runs urbanized meadows in the city and we put together packets of information on raised beds, seed planting schedules, and urban agriculture. I passed these packets around to people so they can set up gardens and planter boxes this spring. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did joining a group make you feel more connected or supported? Why do you think belonging to a group is important?
Delaine Spangler 4/15/2025 4:32 AMHumans are social animals; we need to be a part of groups the same way we need food and water. Having that camaraderie and community gives a sense of belonging, on top of emotional support

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat product did you replace, and why was it important to you? How do you feel about making a small change for a healthier, more sustainable home?
Delaine Spangler 4/14/2025 4:51 AMI've replaced a lot of my cleaning supplies with distilled white vinegar. This is a MUCH cheaper alternative, and a safer/more effective cleaning solution. Just as (if not more) effective than storebought cleaning sprays, the smell dissipates after a few minutes, and doesn't leave the pungent "sea breeze" type smells lingering.-
Delaine Spangler 4/17/2025 4:55 AMWhen I worked at a zoo we cleaned the enclosures with diluted vinegar, since most cleaning sprays bothered (or posed an outright health hazard) to a lot of the animals. I figure if vinegar can clean the bacteria out of a boa constrictor's enclosure, it can work for my kitchen -
