Tammy's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

We just bought a "new to us" house a few streets over from where we currently live. We took a break from renovations the other night and went for a walk. It's such a beautiful neighborhood, and the neighbors all seemed really nice. It felt good to get out and enjoy the fresh air instead of sawdust and paint fumes.

What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

I am slightly obsessed with cleaning TikToks, so I have a plethora of products. Reading some of the ingredients, I can't pronounce a lot of them. I did end up making my own for the kitchen sink and counters, so I wouldn't use bleach so much. I found this mixture online: 1/4 C. Dawn Dish Soap, 1/2 C. Lemon Juice, 3/4 C. Vinegar, 1/2 C. Rubbing Alcohol, and 1.25 C. Water. Works great!!

We are in the process of moving, and the new house has established landscaping that needs some love. I've been researching the best flowers that attract honeybees. We are currently renovating the inside and won't get to the landscaping before this challenge ends. However, I have picked up seeds for sunflowers, wildflowers, black-eyed Susans, and asters. I am really looking forward to getting my hands dirty!

My son's favorite animal has always been sea turtles. Everywhere I go for work, I try to bring back something related to sea turtles. When we learned what straws did to these beautiful creatures, we switched to reusable/washable straws rather than plastic.

I was scheduled to go on a work trip to Texas, but arranged for me to support the production crew virtually.
