Maria Juris's actions

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 3 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 10 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/29/2024 9:39 PM
Practicing zero waste for a day can be challenging due to the need to be mindful of every item consumed or discarded. It requires careful planning, mindful consumption, and sometimes adapting routines to reduce waste. It can be particularly tough when there aren't many zero waste options available in my area or when unexpected waste-producing situations arise.

      Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 8:25 AM
True, in today's age of convenience, it is difficult to have zero waste. We need to plan our activities and tasks to ensure that we will be mindful of the waste it will create.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/29/2024 9:36 PM
Regenerative agriculture focuses on improving soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. I can support by educating more myself about regenerative agriculture, continue supporting farmers that practice the same, and continuous reducing waste on my daily consumptions and actions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/29/2024 9:31 PM
My water footprint is the total volume of freshwater used to produce the goods and services I consume. In order to reduce my water footprint, I have learned about practices like consuming less meat (especially beef, which has a high water footprint), good thing i never use to eat beef,,minimizing food waste, fixing leaks, opting for water-efficient appliances, and supporting businesses with sustainable water practices. 🌏

Thanks to Mario Bejoc and Richard Jimenez who facilitated this lunch and learn session today via MS teams meeting. Learned alot of Emerson efforts and how my company is committed in achieving Net Zero Sustainabilty towards 2030 and up to 2045. As an individual, it's not too late even if I start from small steps so long i will consciously stain the activity until it becomes a habit from simple walking or biking instead of driving, by planning ahead my meal this will definitely create an impact in GHG emissions 🌏 #EarthMonthAtEmerson #EcoChallengeAtEmersonSYSSManilaMCT

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/28/2024 7:07 PM
Ingredients like phosphates, surfactants, and bleach can end up in waterways, disrupting ecosystems and harming aquatic life. Phosphates, for example, can lead to algal blooms, which deplete oxygen levels and harm fish and other aquatic organisms. Choosing environmentally friendly cleaning products with biodegradable ingredients can help mitigate these impacts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and Water
How did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/28/2024 6:54 PM
I have a couple of methods to reduce microplastic release during laundry. Firstly, I focus on using a microfiber filter bag designed to trap microplastics. Secondly, I advise using liquid detergent instead of powder, as it's less abrasive on fabrics, thus releasing fewer fibers. Thirdly, I need to invest in the future for a front-loading washing machine, as they tend to release fewer microfibers compared to top-loading machines. 🌏

Maria Juris Santos 4/28/2024 6:49 PM
Less waste is beautiful! 🌏 Great to know other than skin-friendly Ellana uses environmentally-friendly paper sachet refills and as little plastic packaging as possible. 🌏I've been using this for years.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal Products
How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/28/2024 6:43 PM
Eating more meat can have significant environmental impacts. Livestock farming contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation for pastureland, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. It also requires large amounts of water and grain to feed the animals, contributing to resource depletion and habitat destruction.

    Maria Juris Santos's avatar
Maria Juris Santos 4/28/2024 6:41 PM
Walking and or biking can provide a more immersive and intimate experience with my surroundings compared to driving. You can notice details like the sound of birds, and the feel of the air. It's a slower pace that allows for reflection & connection with the environment.
