I already went this Spring and because of my commitment in this years' Eco Challenge, I will skip the Autumn season.

Richard's actions
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Freshwater + Oceans
Low Water Gardening
Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 10 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 8:21 AMI go on vacations twice a year , Japan is my fave destination. I go on Spring and Autumn because I love the flowers and autumn leaves.
I already went this Spring and because of my commitment in this years' Eco Challenge, I will skip the Autumn season. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Low Water GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 8:09 AMIn this El Nino season, I am extra conscious of the water I use.
Here are some of my practices
- when I shower, I have a wash bin beneath me, that catches the used water. I re-use this to flush the toilet, clean the bathroom
- Instead of having my car washed, I use a waterless car wash, Just spray and wipe
- When I cook rice, I use the rice wash to water my plants -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 7:57 AMI would love to have solar panels in my apartment, but currently, our building doenst support this yet.
Instead , I will continue to ready and educate myself so that someday, I will be ready to be an adopter of solar panels.
Here is a good read https://www.moneymax.ph/asset-management/articles/home-solar-system-cost-
Ivy Geronimo 4/30/2024 8:04 AMWe are seriously considering solar panels in the renovation of our home in Bulacan next year. We already consulted the engineer working on my aunt's house who has solar panels and the price is a bit steep but when he started showing the Math to us, it makes sense. After 3 years, we would have recoup our investment and we will be starting to reap benefits in terms of lower electric bill. For my family who needs aircon in every room, this is really a worthy investment.

Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 7:52 AMfound this Eco friendly vendor of EcoFriendly paper products (bathroom tissue) Ecobudget Corp. Philippines • .
As much as I can, I use bidet or the trusty tabo in my daily call of natures, but for the cases that I need to to use toilet paper, I will make sure to buy only those that practice sustainability! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 7:50 AMJust attended Emerson Responsible Sourcing Webinar - FY Q3, 2024,
I learned that in our role in Supply Chain, we also have the responsibility to extend our sustainability goals to our suppliers and business partners! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 7:47 AMI love photography and would like to invest in equipment. I found out that my neighbor works for FujiFilm and he can loan me some lenses to try.
Amazing! Instead of buying new lens (with all the unnecessary packaging) , I saved my money and the environment! -
Richard Jimenez 4/30/2024 7:45 AMLast hour of the challenge! I am proud of my teammates! they are so passionate about sustainability!
