Tori's actions

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

This has been my favorite activity because I am having a good time learning about growing a pollinating garden. I am growing calendula, mums, nasturtium, snapdragons and milk thistle so far from seed this year, and have been planting creeping thyme all around my property in places that could use a pretty ground cover to keep out weeds and help pollinators. Tulips, lilies, and daisies are all at different stages of coming in from last years planting and the crystalina summersweet is coming back too.

Having a perfect lawn is a big thing in Cincinnati but I have been seeding with red clover instead because I learned that it takes a lot less water and mowing and will also help the bees. I joined the Nextdoor Perennials to Share group and I am excited to have joined a local gardening group as well. Happy spring!

I planted a bunch of creeping thyme as a pretty ground cover that keeps out weeds and helps pollinators. The tulips that I planted last fall also came in and the crystalina summersweet that I also planted last fall is coming back and looking great.

Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

I did a plastic audit the three times I went grocery shopping this month and found that I buy around 15 items each trip that are packaged in an unrecyclable material (mostly plastic). One of the days I drove to Kentucky to go to a co-op but it was a lot of driving to find a grocery store that sells bulk foods like coffee, pasta, cereals, nuts, and fruits and I paid around 3x as much for these bulk foods than I would have at my local Kroger. I was happy to invest the money back into the local economy but I can’t afford to shop like that too often. Cincinnati and Covington, KY also still use plastic bags at the grocery stores. I have gotten a lot better about remembering to bring my own bags and recycling any that I accumulate during the week. Even though I bring my own grocery bags, I still accumulate 10-20 plastic grocery bags each week for the times that I shop at other stores and forget my bags- I definitely have some work to do in this area! I have also found that plastic produce bags are a huge cause of plastic waste and I have taken strides in making sure that I am bringing my own smaller bags or a basket for separating fruits and veggies.

I planted a maple in my front yard at the beginning of the month and I found a dogwood last week that I finally got in the ground in the back

I finally participated in joining a clean-up effort! I'm out in Cincinnati, OH this term and joined up with the local Civic Gardening Center to meet up at the Little Miami River to remove invasive species including Asiatic tearthumb, ivy, reed grass, and a few different varieties of honeysuckle. It was a cool opportunity to meet some new people in my city, learn about the local native plants and the invasives to look out for, and to pick up some trash. I really like to civic garden center out here and look forward to going back :)

My neighborhood in Cincinnati, OH doesn't have bike lanes but I did opt to walk to the post office and to a corner store. My car will be in the shop next week and I will be taking a bus to and from work.

I have been enjoying spending my mornings working on getting my garden beds ready for planting. This time outside has been grounding and gets me in a clear head space to begin my day!
