Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Alana Randol 4/30/2024 8:29 AMWe are on septic system, so never put it in the drain, but I am now aware I can toss it on our compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Alana Randol 4/30/2024 8:27 AMThis weekend is the local kick it to the curb. We set out a few smaller items (dresser, two end tables) and they were claimed, so someone is using them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Understand My Water FootprintWhat did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:12 AMmaking sure to set timers for all garden/watering activities and asked family members to reduce time in shower (although this isn't always successful because who doesn't love a nice long hot shower) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in CleaningWhat did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:11 AMUsing sheet-based laundry detergent with no liquid (no pods). They work great and the brand we have is lavender. Also making my own everyday cleaner with cleaning vinegar and water. The cleaning vinegar is being sold in huge jugs at the dollar tree-
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:49 AMLook up "Tru Earth" or Eco-Max" for the laundry soap sheets. My family doesn't have super greasy/dirty/smelly loads so I can't vouch for more extreme laundry situations, but we are all cold water and these soap sheets. -
Jeff Wawrzeniak 4/24/2024 9:18 AMThe sheet solution is interesting. I wasn't aware. Vinegar and water is very commonly in use at home for different purposes. Very effective.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:09 AMCleaning up litter that blew into our own yard is only one step. My daughter and I also went for a walk and picked up what wasn't icky in the ditches/side of the road as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Volunteer in my CommunityHow does volunteering enhance your community and/or change your relationship with it?
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:08 AMOur community is small, so you tend to see the same good folks out doing the stuff. I'm proud to be one of those folks. Support local arts, community involvement, the local inclusivity initiatives, and member of the the Pride organization -
Alana Randol 4/24/2024 9:07 AMWe keep biodegradable corn-based straws in the car and reuse straws at home -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Alana Randol 4/04/2024 1:13 PMPaper straws are *awful* however we've found one merchant that sells corn-based biodegradable straws. They are 100% like old-school plastic straws but biodegradable! -
Alana Randol 4/04/2024 1:12 PMThis week we've only had vegetarian meals. It's not a full lifestyle change but we are trying new recipes and going meatless a lot more often. I've also switched to coconut/oat half and half and "Next Milk" to replace coffee creamer and milk in all our recipes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Alana Randol 4/04/2024 1:11 PMGot a new water bottle that is extra cold. I've been drinking water and making ice tea in it.
