Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Carolyn Plemons 4/30/2024 7:59 AMThis has been a difficult challenge for me. When I rinse my dishes, I never worried about having crusty leftovers stuck on the plates and dishes. It has been hard to let go and allow the dish washer to do the work for me.-
Lenora Andrews 4/30/2024 8:33 AMI really like using the dishwasher and rarely wash dishes by hands. I do try to stick with running it after 3 p.m. or 7 p.m. on the off-peak hours.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Dishwasher EfficiencyHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
Carolyn Plemons 4/30/2024 7:56 AMWe have been conserving water for some time now. I would say the community needs to pay very close attention to summertime watering bans. I have witnessed several in the community that water lawns and landscaping during bans. I would also say the city needs to enforce sanctions when these breaches occur. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
Carolyn Plemons 4/24/2024 8:27 AMI enjoy planting trees, not only does it make me feel grounded, but it gives me a feeling of doing a good deed for generations to come. It saddens me when new construction takes out trees that are many years old. We have 100-year-old oak trees in our front yard that will be destroyed in order for the County to widen our street to accommodate the growing population. I have been told there is nothing I can do. :( -
Carolyn Plemons 4/22/2024 6:43 AMMy husband and I planted two Texas Pecan trees in honor of Earth Day. It's going to take some years but looking forward to the fruits of our labor.-
Lenora Andrews 4/22/2024 8:38 AMAwesome and exciting!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Carolyn Plemons 4/03/2024 2:09 PMFrom my research, I was able to find out we have a recycling center within about 30 minutes from my home. I have started collecting cooking oil and will take it to the RC.-
Lenora Andrews 4/04/2024 5:08 AMGood morning Carolyn,
Keep up the good work! That is awesome. Every small action helps.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Carolyn Plemons 4/03/2024 2:02 PMAfter reading the information on sustainable and ethically sourced seafood, I feel good about the seafood I buy and feed my family. I have always bought seafood from reputable stores that certify they purchase from wholesalers that follow the required standards. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Carolyn Plemons 4/02/2024 12:28 PMI have been trying to have a no trash day since I was notified of this challenge. I have yet to make it. I did not realize how hard it was going to be.-
Carolyn Plemons 4/15/2024 8:23 AM@Lauren Combs I am not sure. I can tell I have cut back on the amount of trash we have but I still have not been able to cut back to no trash in a day. I am still working on it. -
Lauren Combs 4/14/2024 6:54 AMChecking in to see if this is feasible, Carolyn. I didn't select this one... -
Lenora Andrews 4/04/2024 5:09 AMCarolyn. I also make a lot of trash and I'm not quite sure how to minimize this either.
