Skyler 's actions
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 6 hours in my community.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Climate + Air
Online Energy Audit
Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Skyler P 4/03/2024 12:57 PMI used two reusable bags today for my groceries. I noticed that I felt like I was being judged at the grocery store when I was checking out (self checkout). I felt flustered and the bags wouldn't stay on the carousel easily and I kept getting errors on the machine. But I made it through and I used two less plastic bags today.
I learned that you should use bags with a flat bottom at the grocery store. One of mine did not have that, and it was very annoying to get it to stay. Pro tip!-
Claudia Zimmermann 4/03/2024 1:15 PMMost important thing is that you have tried it and saved plastic bags. If they judge or not, be the role model for others. When they judge they see you and start thinking and this is like a domino effect. In 4 weeks you laugh about this, you have experience with it and know how it works best.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Skyler P 4/03/2024 12:40 PMI don't have a photo from the cleanup, but a local watershed council hosts park cleanups every week starting today until November each year. It's a good feeling knowing that others care too. The turnout was really good for this first clean up, which was great! I'll be going next week too. -

Skyler P 3/14/2024 3:37 PMI'm hoping to participate more consistently than I did last year. Still working on what I want my goals to be... I wish I could do them all!
