Tiffany 's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 0 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

I enjoy volunteering and helping my community. I recently volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank and we packaged noodles. At the end, we packed enough pasta for more than 500 meals!!!

I've bought and been using reusable straws for a couple of years now and it was easy to switch over and use less 1 time use straws. It's even been fun to find straws with different designs on them! I've also found a few collapsible straws to carry around & use at events and meetings.

Knowing I can help, even in a small way to reduce the amount of plastic and straws in the environment makes me happy.

I still remember seeing a video of a sea turtle that was rescued and had almost a full plastic straw removed from one of its nostrils and the pain you could see it in, but it was the relief you saw once it was out. That's always going stick in my mind and be a helpful reminder to do better.

From my time with Garden Club (thanks Mom for dragging me into it (wink)), I've learned a lot about the different pollinators. Things we can do to help including certain plants/flowers we can plant, creating a safer environment in your own backyard for them, certain "housing" for bees we can make or buy, and much more.

When it comes to plants to plant for pollinator foods, such as milkweed for butterflies, I've even learned that there are many different varieties and you have to be careful on which milkweed you plant in your state, because they are considered an invasive species and if they're left to their own devices, they could potentially spread quickly.

Learning more about meat consumption and the multiple affects the meat industry has on the environment, I've started to look into more and better options to get the protein I need. Though there are definitely days that my mind just says "give me the meats!"

From my own experience I can tell you that it changes on the long run and this little voice does not show up anymore.

Biodiversity + Wildlife Reduce Animal Products
How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Tiffany Olley 's avatar
    Tiffany Olley 4/26/2024 11:23 AM
More animals to produce more meat for the population affect many aspects of the planet.

From deforestation (to create the land for the animals), tons of carbon dioxide which is created by the animals (mainly cows, which is one of the major causes of global warming), to pollution runoff from fertilizer and animal waste that gets into our waterways and can even be a cause of "dead zones" in coastal areas.

It was awesome to help the community and see the difference in cleaning. Not only making it a cleaner environment, but safer as well for both people and animals.

Results: Clean beach with multiple bags of trash collected. The trash will be delivered to Washed Ashore which will then sort everything useable and then create sea creatures and sea life out of the collected trash.

Their location in the southern coast area. They make sea creatures or sea themed sculptures out of the trash they get...whole new meaning to reduce, reuse, recycle! They were actually at the State's Garden Club state convention a couple years ago...the sculpture they brought, was AWESOME!! They even had a speaker during the convention too. Very interesting and informative.

This is great! I never heard of Washed Ashore before but will look into it since it sounds like a great organization. Thanks for sharing.

How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

It feels nice to be able to have a plan when grocery shopping (where's my coupons & sales?!). Plus, then you know what to expect for food amounts and can plan appropriately for other meals (breakfast/dinner) as well.

    Tiffany Olley 4/11/2024 11:50 AM
So far, it's actually been easy for me! I've bought reusable bags in varying sizes and keep most in my vehicle. I've also been using my own cart with a collapsible crate, so I don't use any bags (plus it's WAY easier to clean, when it gets dirty).

Let bags used daily and during the weekend, when I grocery shop for the following week.
