David's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.

DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 21

Yesterday I lead a planting workshop with my daughter's preschool class. 10 3 year olds planted sunflower seeds in small cups to take home, care for and watch grow. I am proud that these kiddo's were exposed to planting and possible sparked a connection to plants and the earth.

It's going well, very exciting to know that so many others are thinking in the same fashion and consciously making changes in their live.

Did you know that Stipa Pulchra is a companion crop for California poppies, they look beautiful, are great to prevent erosion, drought tolerant, high-heat tolerant and don't burn well. Unfortunately, invasive grasses are strong competition and wining the battle in many areas. Be mindful of those little "burs" that get stuck to you socks and boots while you're out there...could you be spreading non-native species unknowingly? Remove those little buggers where you pick them up. :)
