David Nussbaum
"This Earth Month, I will engage in community and online activities to increase my knowledge around earth and environment and actions me and my community can take to contribute to a better tomorrow and so that I can articulate to other the importance of these actions."

Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 2 vegan meals each day this week.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Take the Veg Pledge!
Eating a plant-based diet is one of the most impactful (and delicious) ways to reduce your environmental footprint. Follow the link below to join WSP's week-long Veg Pledge and eat vegetarian or vegan from 22-28 April. Take it one step further and host a plant-based pot-luck in your office during April!

Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Grow Local
I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Share My "Why"
I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Learn about Native Species
The world is full of unique species. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

David Nussbaum 4/23/2024 9:05 AMYesterday I lead a planting workshop with my daughter's preschool class. 10 3 year olds planted sunflower seeds in small cups to take home, care for and watch grow. I am proud that these kiddo's were exposed to planting and possible sparked a connection to plants and the earth.-
Pieter de Bod 4/25/2024 1:08 AMThe workshop must have been fun. -
Chun Bee Kok 4/23/2024 9:21 AMGood activity to educate the children!

David Nussbaum 4/19/2024 11:24 AMIt's going well, very exciting to know that so many others are thinking in the same fashion and consciously making changes in their live. -
David Nussbaum 4/19/2024 11:23 AMDid you know that Stipa Pulchra is a companion crop for California poppies, they look beautiful, are great to prevent erosion, drought tolerant, high-heat tolerant and don't burn well. Unfortunately, invasive grasses are strong competition and wining the battle in many areas. Be mindful of those little "burs" that get stuck to you socks and boots while you're out there...could you be spreading non-native species unknowingly? Remove those little buggers where you pick them up. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native SpeciesWhat did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?
David Nussbaum 4/08/2024 10:02 AMQuercus lobata can support up to 2100 different animal species. Elderberry leaves were used mu Chumash people as medicine.-
David Nussbaum 4/18/2024 12:14 PMThe actual number is 200, typo. But that's still an incredible amount! Go Quercus!
