Land, Water, and Air

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 12

I love the concept of reprioritizing wildlife tourism over illegal wildlife trade. The more tourists that invest in a countries' animal conscious tourism the more the governments of those countries will invest in protecting the wildlife and habitat. If you are making a trek around the world to see different wildlife, then why not pay a little more to help protect that wildlife.

I used to be a vet tech and so I started volunteering at the Humane Animal Rescue in their clinic and surgery ward. I love the work and love being able to help homeless animals in our city. I also loved getting to know new people and made a lot of connections with the full-time staff at the shelter.

I just learned about the McKees Rocks (city neighborhood) Burial Mound. It was constructed by two different Native American tribes and shows evidence of early humas and burial practices. Unfortunately, it no longer exists as the natural history museum excavated in the late 1800s. I feel these sites are very important to protect. Many sacred spaces including this one have been desiccated, removed, and forgotten by colonialism and racism. It is important to teach the history of sacred spaces created by all peoples who exist in that space.

That site was an incredibly important place of cultural significance to the Adena people. I'm so glad you had a chance to learn about some of the history and land acknowledgement. I know the Council of the Three Rivers American Indian Center does awesome education work, as well as service work for people in the Pittsburgh region. Definitely check them out if you get the chance! :)

Airplane travel causes a lot of carbon emissions. Visiting other countries and learning about other cultures brings me joy so this is something I will not compromise on. However, I can purchase more local food goods and take more public transit to reduce emissions caused by transportation.

Learning about the 7 principles of leave no trace, I hadn't previously thought much about camping only on durable surfaces. I feel like this could easily be extended to spending time in parks/outdoors to even just set-up chairs and tables for a day outside to now be mindful that they should only be set-up on durable surfaces.

I discovered a new part of my neighborhood that has amazing views of the city. It is interesting because I live in the older part of the neighborhood but up on the hill has newer houses and it is interesting to see how the neighborhood grew over time and house styles changed. The different styles just enhance the beauty and charm of the neighborhood.
