I asked a lot of different people what local environmental concerns they were aware of and one I did not expect was lithium mines! I know that lithium is often used for green energy but the effects of its mining often go overlooked. Lithium mining can be extremely harmful to the earth it is harvested from, including contaminating local water supply. In addition to the mechanical mining of lithium, lots of different chemicals are needed to separate and extract lithium, which are often toxic to the environment.

Reading through different articles about this has disheartened me a little - it seems as though a lot of steps taken forward towards a greener future often set us that many steps back. I was also unaware of how many products use lithium! That is another thing to think about when purchasing eco friendly products.

I wanted to start with a fun fact I learned from one of the shared articles: Indigenous people from the land we live on often refer to the continent of North America as "Turtle Island"! It stems from different indigenous creation stories that imply that the land was formed on the back of a turtle!

One thing I really loved reading in the articles was that indigenous people don't view land and nature as "things" but more so a relative that they foster a connection with. This has inspired me to be more intentional with the way I view and treat our land!

I've heard about Turtle Island and how indigenous people are so connected to nature and their environment. They never take more than they need, making sure that nature can recuperate and can keep on giving. As nature gives, I feel we're obligated to take care of it as a way to thank nature for all the good it has given us.
