Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Learn About Indigenous Conservation Practices
Indigenous communities have stewarded ecosystems for generations through deep-rooted knowledge and connection to nature. I will spend 20 minutes exploring Indigenous conservation methods and reflecting on their role in fostering balance and equity with nature.

Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

Learn to Choose Forest-Friendly Foods
Our food choices can help protect forests and wildlife. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to choose foods that are grown in ways that protect forests, such as avoiding products linked to deforestation and seeking certified sustainable options like shade-grown coffee or palm oil-free products.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 45 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Community and Connection
Connect with nature
The goal is to share how we connect with nature and our environment by posting pictures of our favorite spot. This will allow team member to learn about NC's parks and Natural resources

Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.

Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 2 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

End of the week meal is turning into my favorite! We take all of our "last leg" veggies and chop them up for a stir fry with noodles or rice. We add our preferred sauces to our bowls and everyone is happy. Next week, I'm going to grate some potatoes into it and make a loaded potato pancake.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Well-BeingWhat did you observe or experience while spending time outside, and how did it affect you? How does connecting with nature enhance your physical and mental well-being?
Jamie Leigh 4/18/2025 4:27 AMIt's hard to put into words exactly how being outside makes me feel. There's strong evidence that being outside improves your overall mental health; especially for young(er) people. The phrase "touch grass" really does have positive effects! Listening to the birds and squirrels while enjoying a cup of tea is what I particularly enjoy. There is instant gratification in filling the feeders and watching them all flock to it, or planting a flower and seeing the bees dive into it. I "tell the bees" all the news and chat with them while the buzz about. It's just good for the soul - a quirky habit :) -

My daughter is a member of Beta in high school and one of her community service activities was to assist the Kiwanis Club with a log of the cemetery plots and headstones to cross check the records. I helped her with this project and we spent the afternoon being humbled by the fragility and strength of life.-

Cris, we had to walk the newest area of the cemetery and log the names and dates of each plot. Some plots were from the mid 1800's. I've only lived here for five years but recognized some names. We even had a marker with my daughter's same month & day for birth with my month and day for the death. -

Brought some gloves and a grocery bag to clean up at the park while I did my walk. I'm tremendously pleased that it wasn't bad at all! Just a few water bottles and sports bottles near our rec center, plus a few balloons bits from a recent party.-

Nicely done. I try to remember to bring gloves and a bag with me when I'm out to catch some of the litter. I have more heavy duty tools for dedicated clean up walks, but every bit helps!
