Anna's actions
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Use Public Transit
Public transportation reduces pollution, improves community, and creates safe streets. I will use public transit 9 miles per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Action Track: Community
Swap before you spend
The idea is to create awareness about the amount of goods that land in landfills across the globe and to encourage thrifting, swapping items, yard sales, borrowing of goods etc. It is environmentally friendly since it minimizes the water used and the carbon and chemical pollution from various industries.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 1 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 15 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Anna Anamica 4/18/2024 11:57 PMIn my quest to assess the amount of waste we produce on a daily basis, I stumbled upon a useful website that features a global waste calculator. The website also includes various categories that demonstrate the impacts of waste, which was quite enlightening. If you're interested, you can check it out below:

Anna Anamica 4/15/2024 2:20 AMComposting is often seen as impossible for people living in small spaces. However, through further research, I discovered that even if you have limited space, you can create your tiny compost box. Urban areas offer municipal composting programs that you can take advantage of. Check with your local authorities to see if such a program exists in your area. They may provide containers or even offer curbside pickups for organic waste. Worm composting, also known as vermicomposting, is another excellent option for small spaces. Here's how it works: You'll need a container with holes for aeration (even the size of a shoebox will do), moist newspaper, organic matter (such as kitchen scraps), and red wiggler worms. Layer the container with moist newspaper and add the organic matter and worms. Continuously add scraps as needed, and regularly churn and turn the compost to manage odour and maximize its effectiveness. Small container composts are also a viable option for those with a home garden. These containers are available in the market and can fit in tight spaces. Place them under your sink, in a hall cabinet, or by your door, and remember to layer various organic materials and turn the compost regularly for optimal results. Lastly, share your composting efforts with friends, neighbours, and your community. By involving others, especially with more urban dwellers becoming gardeners, you can create a positive impact. -

Anna Anamica 4/11/2024 6:59 AMThe benefits of indoor plants in the office:One of the first studies into the long-term effects of office plants was conducted in 2014 by researchers in Australia, the UK, and the Netherlands. It examined three office environments over several months and found greenery significantly increases workplace satisfaction in employees, heightens self-reported concentration levels, and improves perceived air quality. So here is my little Green on my desk ;)!!!!

Anna Anamica 4/08/2024 12:22 AMA week into this challenge the realisation hits hard how much overconsumption we do as individuals in food, clothing everyday items. The most shocking bit so far has been the plastic - It's everywhere in everything I notice it so much now. I am surprised I did not pick it up earlier because we have so much single-use plastic surrounding us we are drowning in plastic which will not even decompose in my lifetime.
