    Land, Water, and Air
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money? What patterns did you notice in the food you threw away, and how can you address them?

Sadly, most food that gets tossed is of the healthy and good kind (fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade bread) because it lacks the preservatives to make it last forever and is not ultra-processed or pre-packaged. But learning how to make stews or soups using some of these is helpful.

Agreed! My friend also keeps a bag of leftover veggies (onions, garlic skin, etc) in her freezer to help make soup stock with.

Are you using dishwasher pods wrapped in plastic or not? Those little wrappers can clog your drains and are environmentally harmful.

Yeah dishwasher pods tend to be wrapped in plastic and I didn't really understand the extend to which they can clog drains until recently. After I finish my current batch, I'm going to go buy a more eco-friendly alternative!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

    Marlene Martin's avatar

As you shower think about other ways to reduce waste. I switched to shampoo and conditioner bars as well as bar soap cutting down on all of the plastic bottles. Maybe a shop near you also sells shampoo or soap in bulk so you can take your own bottle and refill it. While you're in the bathroom, how about laundry detergent sheets instead of liquid gel or pods.

One thing I try to do is slowly phase out one-time use products and replace them with more durable alternatives: paper towels -> microfiber cloth, razors, single-use water bottles, reusable coffee cups. I am probably forgetting a lot.

Love it, Marlene. I've made a lot of these swaps already. I shifted to using a French press instead of a keurig, which not only saves all the plastic from individual cups, but it's super easy to add my coffee grounds to my compost or garden! Might have to take the leap and eliminate paper towels...
