It is deeply rewarding to bring together different people with a common goal. The feedback and refining of the idea from a vague notion to a clear course of action is invigorating. And making more friends is a bonus.
"To see the beauty around me and share the view with others."

Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

Soil and Food
Use Guelph Waste App to determine what belongs in each waste stream
I will use the Guelph Waste App to help sort my waste into the correct stream and make sure items like batteries, pharmaceuticals and electronic waste are disposed of properly.
Water
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Action Track
Remember to bring a reusable cup or water bottle when you're out.
I will bring a reusable drink cup with me for my beverage orders or water refill stations to reduce the amount of single-use item waste I create.
Community
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.
Soil and Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals meals each day.
Soil and Food
Learn How to Save Pollinators
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spend 30 minutes learning how to support local pollinators and take at least one action—such as planting native flowers or avoiding pesticides—to help sustain resilient ecosystems and harvests.

Lisa MacT 4/27/2026 5:55 PMSunday afternoon I attended a book talk with Suzanne Simard about her new book: When the Forest Breathes. It was in the arboretum centre at the University of Guelph. The event, host by the Bookshelf, sold out. The questions from the audience were so thoughtful.
And not only was the auditorium packed - the whole arboretum was filled with people strolling around enjoying a beautiful spring day.-
Anika Rajesh 4/27/2026 6:34 PMThat's wonderful! I love that so many people attended the event and really engaged with ecological literature.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow did joining a group make you feel more connected or supported? Why do you think belonging to a group helps people face challenges more effectively?
Lisa MacT 4/27/2026 5:49 PMA couple of us tree lovers have begun talking about an idea to celebrate Guelph 200. It is early days for developing this project. A funding opportunity opens in November so we have a good amount of time to formulate an action plan.
It is deeply rewarding to bring together different people with a common goal. The feedback and refining of the idea from a vague notion to a clear course of action is invigorating. And making more friends is a bonus. -
Lisa MacT 4/23/2026 6:01 AMThe Trees for Guelph Earth Day Corporate planting day was a resounding success. Participants from 8 organizations including 2 large groups that joined for the first time planted 430 trees and shrubs. The site chosen by the City was perfect. Easy digging, Large enough for 102 volunteers to fill in a day. But not too large.-

Lisa MacT 4/20/2026 7:45 AMJust doing some last minute organizing for Trees for Guelph. Our season is gearing up! Wednesday is the launch with a corporate Earth Day Tree Plant at Hanlon Creek Park. We have the bushel of apples from the Guelph Farmer's Market to hand out after planting - the perfect snack at a tree planting. Moritz is picking up the plants for the season today at Verbinnens Nursey - native seed grown stock. The plants will hang out in the GRCA tree cooler until they are needed. The shovels and mulch buckets and water bins are getting picked up from the storage facility tomorrow. And we start welcoming planters at 10am April 22, 2026.

Lisa MacT 4/10/2026 11:54 AMYesterday I took the Go Train into Toronto. I carpooled to get to the station from home and walked five blocks between Union Station and the office.
The 7:57am Go Train is very crowded with passengers embarking in Guelph. I counted more than one hundred people on the platform. It used to just be less than 20 people many years ago.-
Bryan Ho-Yan 4/11/2026 5:38 AMI love seeing more people take the train in. I took the recently added weekend service in a few weeks back and it was great. Joined lots of others doing the same too!
