Biodiversity + Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 1 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Advocate for Forest Protection

Using my voice can help create a more sustainable and just world. I will contact 1 local, regional, or national decision makers to advocate for public policy that protects forests and improves their ability to sequester carbon and nourish biodiversity.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Forest-Friendly Foods

I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 0
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Being a part of something greater breaks down our individual barriers, improves our mental health, and makes life just a little bit better for all. I loved volunteering at the animal sanctuary and farm because I always learn new
skills and make friends. I also know that my efforts are contributing to tackling food insecurity and a more compassionate world where animals are taken care of properly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Biodiversity + Wildlife Grow Local
How did it feel to plant something native in your area to support local wildlife and biodiversity? What did you plant? Please consider adding a photo.

Checked out Fruition Seeds in Naples, New York. They sell a lot of seeds that are regionally adapted and work best in our Finger Lakes climate. I got some potato seed and am excited to cut those up and try planting!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Thought I was going to crush this challenge with zero waste, but realized I used the tea bags in the pantry... Hmm I love free tea, but should I start brewing looseleaf and home and bringing it in??

That's still quite an accomplishment!!! I don't think I would do very well on that challenge, but I bet it gets you to thinking of alternatives. Great job.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Going outside is major for my mental health. I love puttering around in the garden and checking every five minutes to see if my peas have sprouted yet :)

I love fresh from the garden peas~ one of these years we are going to have a garden, but we just aren't set up for it right now. The deer are enjoying the heck out of our native plants and flowers- I"m sure they would love some veggies too.... which is why we haven't done a garden yet!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Regenerative Agriculture and Me
What did you learn about the practice and benefits of regenerative agriculture? How can you support healthy farming practices for people and the planet?

    Emilee Lindner's avatar
    Emilee Lindner 4/17/2024 7:59 AM
I learned that "no-till" is an excellent way for soil to retain its health. Regenerative agriculture is a must for our food production going forward. These facts speak for themselves and scare me: "Food production has altered our planet more than any other human activity. It accounts for 24% of greenhouse emissions and 70% of all freshwater usage; it is perhaps the single greatest cause of biodiversity loss."
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land + Forests Forest-Friendly Foods
What did you learn about forest-friendly foods? How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Emilee Lindner's avatar
    Emilee Lindner 4/04/2024 6:20 PM
I poked around the Rainforest Alliance website, which gives certifications to brands that meet "rigorous" environmental and social standards. But some of the brands gave me pause, like plastic polluter Nestle or child labor-using Hershey. I'm confused about why they are dubbing these brands as "ok"?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Borrow Before I Buy
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

Allison and I swapped seeds earlier this year, and I got to plant them out this week! The chamomile seeds are tiny and I can't wait to see how they grow. (Thanks, Allison!)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Save the Bees
What did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!

Local varieties of snapdragon, zinnia, and rudbeckia. The seeds haven't germinated yet, but I will share pics when they do! I cannot wait for how beautiful they will be. I hope to attract many pollinators this year.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Learn about Native Species
What did you learn about a native plant or animal species in your region?

    Emilee Lindner's avatar
    Emilee Lindner 4/04/2024 5:56 PM
I learned about native hazelnut trees. There are a lot of cold-hardy varieties that do really well in my area. I am going to try to amend my soil to provide a good environment for them, and then order two (needed for pollination). I learned that the majority of hazelnuts are grown in Oregon or Turkey, but we need more diversity in our area. I would love to get a hazelnut crop every year and cut down on my dependency of shipping hazelnuts from far away. Think of the possibilities! Homemade nutella! Nut milk! Nut butter!
