Action Track: Community

Sustainability Lunch and Learn

Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 60 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 5 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans

I will spend 30 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Join a Cleanup Effort

I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 3 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

We prepare at least 3 dinner meals per week with the food from a local supplier. Once per week on Monday we receive a box with all the ingredients you need to make 3 recipes/meals. Like Hello Fresh but then from a local company who gets all the ingredients from local farms. The food quality is amazing, like you eat at a restaurant.

Last weekend we decided to take the train instead of the car. The kids loved it! My 3 year old son keeps saying each time he sees a train: "I've been in there!".
The train station is only at a 10 min walk from here, so very comfortable way to travel.

This new device in the office is making it even easier to go plastic bottle free. You can fill up your bottle or glass and choose between normal, cold or sparkling water. It also gives you the option to add a flavour to it, which is nice and refreshing.

Been taking my kids to school/nursery today on the electrical cargo bike. It was cold, but sunny, so nice weather to go outside. And faster than the car as well because I am not stuck in traffic and finding a spot to park.

Today in Ede, we enjoyed a workshop about recycling, organized by the waste collecting company ACV. ACV is just around the corner from our facility in Ede. They taught us what can(not) be recycled, what happens if you put something in the wrong recycle bin, and also what they are recycling for Emerson. We did a nice quiz, making it interactive and engaging. Big thanks to the organizers! It was very insightful.

At the end, we received this nice small wheelie bin, which I will give to my 3 year old son to play with. He is a massive fan of the garbage truck and every time they come in our street to collect the garbage, he is waiting in front of the window to wave at them :)

Happy Earth Day team! Any nice plans/activities for today?
In Ede, we will enjoy a workshop recycling, hosted by a waste recycling company that's here around the corner.

    Have a great day!

We have this 3-in-1 bin in our kitchen, making it easier to separate waste for better recycling: one for plastic, one for green waste and one for the rest. We are putting our paper waste in a separate box. This means our waste is already separated before we bring it outside to one of the wheelie bins in de back garden. The kids also perfectly know in which bin to put each type of waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Calculate My Carbon Impact
Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Roy Lether's avatar
    Roy Lether 4/17/2024 1:16 AM
Calculating my personal earth overshoot and carbon footprint was very insightful.

I was quite shocked to find out that, if everyone lived like me, we would need 3 earths.. That really made me think, because I thought it wouldn't be that bad.

However on the other side, my carbon footprint was quite good: 4.3 ton CO2/year (i.e. the category: Climate Friend). Most people in the Western world have a carbon footprint of 5-10 (closer to 10).
My strong points are use of solar panels, recycling nearly everything and consuming local food.
But there is room for improvement. I should eat less beef, eat more vegetarian food and buy more 2nd hand.
With all that, I could bring it down to 3.1 ton CO2/year.

How much is your carbon footprint? Use the calculator provided with this one-time action!

Planted some tulips in our street together with the neighbours.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Roy Lether's avatar
    Roy Lether 4/14/2024 5:21 AM
More and more people in my area choose for “easy-to-maintain” gardens, which means: more concrete, less plants. As a result, there is less m2 of area that can actually absorb the water, so a lot of the rain water goes down to the drain into the sewer. Instead of staying deep in the ground for dryer periods.
