Clover's actions

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Biodiversity and Me

I will spend at least 15 minutes each day researching what biodiversity is, how biodiversity positively impacts our world, and how the loss of biodiversity harms it. I will share what I learn on the feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Beauty and Personal Products

Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Smart Seafood Choices

We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 60 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Stay on the Ground

Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Use, bring, and wash your reusable straws everyday!

I have been drinking soda from home off of this machine instead of purchasing the 12-can coke boxes or the 6 mini-plastic bottles that I used to get. When I am out, I don't consume soda unless it's out of a fountain, like I work in a restaurant, so I consume soda at work as well. Other than that, if I see a restaurant using soda cans as a serving beverage, I do not consume them at that restaurant.

My housemate and I both have Mondays are this month, so we went to visit nurseries for some vegetables and herbs that we want to plant. We are getting these herbs into the dirt today.

Taking my time to "explore my area." I used to have to drive far to get out of town for a good hike, but last year I moved into a forest area. In this area are hiking trails that I used to go to, so now I only need to drive 15-20 minutes to get there, instead of an hour or two.

I always love purchasing items when they say they were packaged with recycled paper, etc. I highly encourage everybody to look for these little logos and messages on the boxes and purchase these items.

I've been eating vegetarian for a week, and I notice a change in my stamina and energy whenever I cut meat out of my diet. This is not the first time I have done a vegetarian diet for weeks, if not months at a time. While I love a good steak, it feels really good to eat vegetarian most days.

Upon starting this class, my housemates and I worked together to have some fun planting some vegetables in the garden. This one is new, but we also have one that's actually directly in the ground.

Recently, I finished a 60+ hours round trip train ride traveling back to California from Seattle. I read online that riding the train produces less CO2 emission than airplanes. So I thought I would give it shot for experience purposes. In Taiwan, I rode the train a lot, so I thought it was do-able. But trains in Asia are so much more efficient and fast, the Amtrak trains were quite slow. If this ride is in Taiwan or Japan, it could've finished with less than half of the time. I would love the ride the train more if it was faster as well as if the overnight stay seats were much more comfortable.

I had coffee with my friends, and I used no straw. And also, I made sure none of my friends use straws. Though this is a ton of plastics though :(

I went through the list of low carbon diet and decided this is what I am having for dinner.
