Land, Water, and Air
Mow with Human Fuel
Using a push lawn mower fueled by human power instead of gasoline is a great way to help cut down on emissions. Electric leaf blowers and edging equipment vs gasoline is also a plus!
Share My Why
Take the Earth Month Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
I will take a short survey about my experience to help the Ecochallenge team improve future events, earn a chance to win a prize, and earn 15 points!
Wildlife
Learn How to Save the Bees
Bees and other pollinators are vital to ecosystems and agriculture. I will spending 30 minutes learning about local pollinators and why they are so important.
Health and Well-Being
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Land, Water, and Air
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Wildlife
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.
Wildlife
Plant (or Adopt) a Plant
Landscaping with native plants, gardening, and having plants inside can have benefits for nature and our health. I will plant or adopt a new plant or grow one from seeds and post a photo of it to the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Conduct a Home Energy Audit
Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.
Wildlife
Learn to Grow Plants Your Way
Growing plants can be rewarding and can create habitats big and small for wildlife. And, we can grow things almost anywhere! I will spend 30 minutes researching options for growing plants either inside or outside.
Land, Water, and Air
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports gardens. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for 1 outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Wildlife
Learn to be a Responsible Tourist
Being a responsible tourist means not disturbing wildlife and choosing eco-friendly tour operators and destinations that prioritize wildlife conservation and respect animal welfare. I will spend 30 minutes researching ways to travel responsibly to ensure my adventures support, rather than harm, wildlife and their habitats.
Wildlife
Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace
Leave No Trace means enjoying nature responsibly by minimizing our impact and leaving the environment as we found it, or better. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the seven core principles to minimize my impact while enjoying the outdoors.
Land, Water, and Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.
Land, Water, and Air
Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 30 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.
Land, Water, and Air
Take Shorter Showers
Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!
Community and Connection
Attend a Local Event
Local events such as farmers' markets, festivals, or community meetings like town halls are great ways to feel part of a community. I will attend 1 community events to connect with others and learn more about my area.
Sustainable Innovation
Choose a Product Made with Sustainable Materials
Every choice matters. I will purchase or switch to products made from sustainable or recycled materials to support innovation and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainable Innovation
Replace Old Bulbs with LED Bulbs
Energy-efficient lighting is a bright idea. I will replace 5 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health and Well-Being
Enjoy Fruits and Veggies
Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 5 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.
Community and Connection
Visit or Learn About a Culturally Significant Site Near Me
Sites of cultural and spiritual significance hold deep meaning for many communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. I will learn about or visit a site near me that is significant to the history, culture, or environment of the area. I will approach my visit with respect by researching its importance and guidelines beforehand, reflecting on how we can preserve these spaces for future generations.
Health and Well-Being
Audit Toxic Products in my Home
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 30 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Land, Water, and Air
Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.
Wildlife
Learn About Moths as Pollinators
Attend the Moths Matter Presentation to learn more about moths, why they are important and what we can do to make our yards better suited for moths.
Wildlife
Taking out the Invasives, Inviting in the natives
Weed out the non-native plant species in your yard such as buckthorn, canary reed grass, day lillies and dames rocket. Allow native species that most think of as weeds such as woodland violets and fleabane.
Community and Connection
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 2 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

It's the last day of the challenge. I get in such a habit of checking in everyday that I may just have to try and sustain a 10 minute self check-in about the environment each morning!
Hope everyone had a great time with the challenges - keep up the great work of doing good for our planet!-

Thought for the day - air drying your hands vs using paper. Which is better for the environment? I feel like I get a lot of different answers to this question! -

It occurred to me that we have compost bins in the cafeterias but not in our kitchen breakrooms. I realize it's an extra bin, but wondering if we would be able to have workplace solutions work on that. I love that we have recycling, but for everyone who brings a lunch or eats outside of the cafeteria - it's hard to get rid of food waste properly - like banana peels or apple cores. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionWhat did you enjoy or learn from attending a local event in your community? How did participating in this event deepen your connection to your local area?
Denise Krol 4/26/2025 5:44 AMWhen your child is in a sport, that becomes a community for a season. April is heavy for badminton competitions. In attending all events possible for the season, we saw new schools and connected with other parents from our school and others. It's great to see the kids grow in their skills and mental toughness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity and ConnectionHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I have always been a regular on donating to Goodwill. With our household soon to shrink a bit more as we send one off to college, we did some major cleaning out with more to come. The Freeshare site is interesting and something we may be able to use in the future.-

I have been donating to Goodwill for almost 12 years. I found a woman and children shelter here in Arizona that always needs clothes, shoes and toys. As my son grow, it was easy to get rid of clothes, shoes, toys and books to someone else that needs it. We clean out the closets every month. It's great to see smiles when we drop it off to the items at the shelter. -
Maggie Tracey 4/22/2025 3:16 PMDonating is great Denise! I donate most clothing to a veterans association (they request it), and other clothing and housewares to Wings resale shops which support women and children's shelters. I can put you in touch when your clean-out is underway if you're interested. :)

Silicone bags instead of ziploc bags are a great alternative. I've found them very useful and just as good for most items that need to be stored. I've also purchased a plant based cling wrap but I'm not sure it's as good as they make it out to be. Baby steps! I have metal travel containers for water and coffee which I didn't think about before - but is a great way to reduce plastic use.-

I didn't think before about how travel can help promote that industry and thus have governments support it more. Better to travel and leave things where they are than to encourage trade on items that were poached. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWildlifeHow did it feel to plant something, and what kind of gardening did you do (indoors, hydroponic, outside in a garden, etc)? What did you plant and where? Feel free to share a photo to the feed!

I have multiple wildflower gardens around the yard. Last year, we dug up more grass on the west side of our yard to do another strip of wildflowers. In cleaning out my main garden, I was able to dig up several beards tongue plants that were popping up in places I didn't want them and transfer them to the new garden. I will hopefully have more varieties to re-plant there also.
In addition, I got out and planted the peas and beans into my veggie garden. These are all seeds from last year that I reserved so I didn't have to buy seeds this year. I can't wait for them to grow!-

I absolutely love the ideas of wildflowers rather than grass!! Such wonderful views and support of wildlife rather than water consuming grass. It would be nice to be able to push HOAs to move towards permaculture rather than grass lawns. It is difficult to fight when many members like the look of grass and complain that wildflowers / permaculture would look unkept and resemble weeds. Another suggestion in HOA areas is to have a community garden area for shared vegetables but again it is met with resistance due to upkeep. So frustrating!

I'm a native flower gardener but not so great with house plants and vegetables. I've gotten better with house plants over the years. I still struggle with the right vegetables for my garden area. The shade/sun mix changes all season long. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand, Water, and AirWhat water justice issues did you learn about, and who is most affected in your community? How can you contribute to creating equitable access to clean water in your area?

Clean water isn't a huge issue where we live. I was surprised to find out 2 in 5 health care facilities don't have access to water for proper hygiene. I also didn't realize that it's BILLIONS of people affected. Not the Millions affected is much better, but this number is a lot larger than I anticipated.
