This month, I made a point to keep ecological impact in my conversations with people - something I've always held back on out of fear of being labeled a buzzkill. And maybe I was a little less entertaining to some, but there is also a chance that someone was able to resonate with something I said. After all, someone saying something is how I first started learning and caring about a lot of things.

Word of mouth is a powerful force, it is best if it's used for good.

End of EcoChallange 2025! What a time it was, thanks for participating!

Started using peppermint essential oil as a natural spider repellent. Apparently, many bugs, spiders, and even rodents are deterred by certain scents, notably citrus, peppermint, and eucalyptus. About a month into having sprayed potential points of entry, we have not seen a single spider in the apartment, none in the car, but still an occasional morning spider on the car. Turns out they don't get much of a say in what to land on when they "balloon", peppermint or not.

Overall, I'd call it a success!

Did you know that properly finished wooden coat hangers can last you a lifetime? Granted, your plastic hangers will likely outlive you and your children and possibly their children, though not in a good, functional way, but rather in a way that puts microplastics in everyone's lungs and brains.

What I am trying to say is you probably won't be able to meaningfully get away from any plastic you may already own, but I guarantee that most (not all) of your future purchases will have a better non-plastic alternative. It's just something I try to consider more.

Love it! If wooden hangers are outside of your budget, you can opt to buy used plastic hangers from a thrift store (tons at Savers) and avoid first use plastics.

A little story about how the eco-challenge burst my sock bubble.

I have been feeling very good about buying a particular brand of socks for a couple of years now. Their name is Latin for bumblebee, and they stitch “Bee Better” inside every pair; they put bees and hexagons on their designs; they claim to donate "a pair" for each pair sold.

That is to say, I felt within my rights to assume that through supporting this brand, I was contributing to some pollinator protection initiative. I never allowed myself the time to verify that assumption until committing to the eco challenge this year.

And so I discovered that their social-impact model focuses on donating clothing to people experiencing homelessness, and not at all pollinator conservation. Which makes sense; they do, after all, claim to donate "pair for fair", and bees quite famously don't bother with footwear.

I am not unhappy with their real initiative, but I suspect they do intentionally use false advertising, and I would not have known otherwise. Making a meaningful impact is a true commitment and probably a lifelong one at that. You can't simply follow the marketing. Alas.

Try a safety razor if you haven't in a while! They are so much better in every way; they give you a closer shave, reduce skin irritation, they are incredibly cost-effective, and one can probably write a book about the ecological impact disparity between using cartridge razors vs. safety.

The reason I am urging you to try one if you haven't in a while is that they have gotten very clever in recent years. So even if you've had a less than pleasant experience in the past, now may be the time to rediscover the safety razor for yourself!

I switched to a Hanson razor about 3 years ago (side note: it comes with a lifetime warranty), and have not looked back. I hear there are even better ones on the market these days, so please consider parting with your amateur-shaving, skin-burning, wallet-draining, planet-hating cartridge or worse yet, disposable razor :)

I 100% second this! This is one of those rare instances where eco consciousness can be more affordable than its more "convenient" version. Costly razor blades for brands like Gillette can be replaced by blades that cost cents a piece.

Austin packs a lot of culture into a relatively small footprint. While it seems not to harbor too much extensive history, Austin is blooming with culture. After looking into its culturally significant sights, I have come to believe that Austin is creating its history right now (as in within our lifetime), and we get to be part of it!

The city has a strong expressive identity, manifested in extravagant art pieces all around downtown, colorful streets and storefronts, lively chatter from any direction, and unapologetic uniqueness.

This past 4th of July, I saw a gentleman riding a longhorn bull past the highrises in downtown Austin. I wouldn't expect to witness anything of the sort anywhere else.

This is a handy list of everyday food items that are toxic/harmful to your four-legged loved ones.

Toxic to Both Cats and Dogs:
    - Chocolate – Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to pets.
    - Grapes & Raisins – Can cause kidney failure, especially in dogs.
    - Onions, Garlic, Leeks, Chives – Damage red blood cells and can cause anemia.
    - Alcohol – Even small amounts can be very dangerous.
    - Caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks) – Can lead to rapid heart rate, seizures, and even death.
    - Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter) – Can cause insulin release, leading to hypoglycemia and liver failure in dogs.
    - Raw Dough (with yeast) – Expands in the stomach and can cause bloat or alcohol poisoning from fermenting yeast.
    - Macadamia Nuts – Extremely toxic to dogs; can cause tremors, weakness, and vomiting.
    - Moldy or Spoiled Food – Duh..

    Especially Toxic to Dogs:
    - Hops (used in brewing beer) – Can cause malignant hyperthermia (potentially fatal).
    - Fatty Foods (like bacon, butter) – Can trigger pancreatitis.
    - Cooked Bones – Can splinter and cause internal damage or choking.

    Especially Toxic to Cats:
    - Tuna (in large amounts) – Not balanced for cats and can lead to malnutrition or mercury poisoning. (Mindblowing!)
    - Dog Food – Lacks essential nutrients cats need, may contain dangerous amounts of salts.
    - Lilies (any part of the plant) – Even licking pollen can lead to fatal kidney failure.

Honorable Mentions (Dangerous in High Quantities)
    - Dairy – Many pets are lactose intolerant, leading to digestive issues.
    - Avocados – Contains persin, which is more toxic to birds and some animals, but can upset dogs and cats too.
    - Salt – Too much can lead to sodium ion poisoning.
    - Raw Eggs, Meat, or Fish – Risk of Salmonella or E. coli; raw fish can contain thiaminase (destroys vitamin B1).

Thanks for keeping your pets safe!
