JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON

I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.

COMPLETED

Action Track: Community

SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 120 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 30

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

Impact investments are investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. Impact investments can be made in both emerging and developed markets, and target a range of returns from below market to market rate, depending on investors' strategic goals.

The growing impact investment market provides capital to address the world’s most pressing challenges in sectors such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, conservation, microfinance, and affordable and accessible basic services including housing, healthcare, and education.

Every small step count - sometime you inspire others by doing what you do, so the impact grows faster - and with friends / like-minded people it's always easier to get startet / stay on track.

Ethical investing has become such a widespread concern among investors that mutual fund managers have responded accordingly. There is a vast array of products to choose from. There are mutual funds that only include companies that publicly adhere and espouse certain ideals. There are mutual funds in which a certain percentage of your investment goes toward community investment.

I planted dahlias, a seed mixture from bee-friendly flowers, lavender and also some greens, like salad or herbs, then tomatoes, I have strawberry plants and a raspberry. Every year my balcony garden is growing, blooming, and getting greener and greener - always having the tiny friends in mind.
Some of them already sprout. :)

Where in your life do you emit the most carbon? What change are you willing to make in your daily life to reduce this output?

    Anne Hartmann's avatar
    Anne Hartmann 4/15/2024 5:01 AM
In my life I emit the most carbon whilst shopping groceries, since many foods (like salad, tomatoes, bell pepper, ..) are still packed in plastic. I try to focus on more unpacked an regional products. Also I already eat vegetarian meals often but I'll try to include more vegan options in the future.

Unfortunately (at least for that) I am living in Berlin.. There is a market nearby but I am not quite sure if the products are regional products or not. But fortunately supermarkets like Rewe or Edeka more and more tend to sell regional products.

Do you have the to buy at your local Farmer or market? This has helped me to reduce plastic tremendously.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

I have different ideas / thoughts on that topic:
    • Maybe store rainwater from the roof in underground cisterns like our employer does. The stored water can be used to water plants and/or as gray water for toilets.
    • Also when it comes to washing cloth: only wash when needed, washing machine with right fill level, ..
    • Think of what you eat: What food needs a lot / not so much water to grow
    • ...

It feels good not to have to throw food away. I also find planned meals stress-reducing, as I don't have to worry about what I'll eat after a long day.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

I really enjoy rinding by bike to the office. It's like a kickstart into the day and gives me so much energy.
When I got to the office by public transport, I also enjoy walking part of my way back home and call family or friends. It helps me to unwind after a long day in the office.
