Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Join a Cleanup Effort
Working together to clean up public spaces helps the environment and builds community. I will participate in 1 community cleanup efforts in my neighborhood or local area.

Reduce Refined Sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

Reduce Food Waste
Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Save Water When Washing Dishes
Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

Learn About Water Justice
Access to clean water is a basic right, yet not everyone has it. I will spend 60 minutes learning about water justice issues and who is affected.

Analisa H 4/29/2025 8:23 AMLast year we changed our windows to more energy efficient windows - the temperature lost during the cold months with the old windows was causing us to have to heat the house more. Now we can keep the temperature lower and its much more comfortable. -

As we come to the last few days of Earth month, I'm still reminding myself that we should be mindful of our impact everyday. I started my year promising myself I wouldn't have a lot of discretionary spending and I have kept to that really well. Its good for the Earth and my wallet!-

What surprised me the most is the water footprint in food - especially chocolate! 4 ounces of chocolate is 516 gallons of water...being more conscious of the food I eat will help reduce my footprint. And of course, reducing my shower time which is a life goal.. -

The environmental Justice Coalition for Water states "Access to clean, safe, and affordable water is a fundamental human right essential for a healthy population, environment, and economy. Many communities, particularly those of low-income and communities of color are under-served. Unlike other groups, these communities lack access to safe, affordable water for drinking, subsistence, cultural, and/or recreational uses. Water justice will only be achieved when inclusive, community-based forms of water management are developed and we address the health and environmental burdens low-income communities and communities of color bear."

We had a full carpool yesterday to celebrate Earth day! I have become more conscious of the types of snacks I buy my family and try to buy bulk snacks when I can. Procured reusable stainless steel containers to keep up with their snacking needs.-

Its amazing to calculate the impact and then review where you make the most impact (because a lot of times it doesn't seem like that much). Our natural gas footprint in our home is fairly high, we've turned down the thermostat pretty low at night and during the day we keep it at 66.. I am turning it down 1 more degree to see if we can tolerate 65.. :-) -
