This is something I have been doing for several months now, but really have been intentional about not "slipping up" at all for convenience's sake during Earth Month. It is of limited trouble to me to make these changes to my daily coffee routine and the impact in noticeable in terms of my waste reduction levels!
  • Reflection Question
Basic Needs & Security Try a New Vegan or Vegetarian Recipe
What was the dish you made, and how did it turn out? What did it feel like to try a new recipe? If you can share a picture, please do!

I made vegetarian lasagna which included zucchini and bell peppers instead of ground beef. It turned out quite well!

Proud to share the news of Emerson receiving the Energy Star Partner of the Year award on LinkedIn!
  • Reflection Question
    Economy & Communities Mend Clothing
What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

I had one shirt and a pair of shorts that unfortunately both had tears. I am not much of a sewer, but I watched a couple of Youtube videos and gave it my best effort to mend these rather than simply buying new items.

I was in Washington DC for a conference last week with two other coworkers. Our flights all departed DCA at different times on the last day, but we decided to carpool together in one taxi to the airport rather than each taking separate cars (which would have been more convenient and spacious). This was a good move to reduce costs and reduce our collective footprint (i.e. Scope 3 - business travel).

My utility company offers a new service to estimate energy usage breakdown of residences. I completed this and was pleased with what I learned. The majority of my energy usage is going to HVAC, specifically electricity for comfort cooling in the summer and gas for comfort heating during the winter. I use my Sensi smart thermostat to implement setbacks on the system for times I am not around to reduce my consumption. I also believe I have an opportunity to improve my home's insulation to further decrease overall usage.
  • Reflection Question
Economy & Communities Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the clean energy shift?

Ameren Missouri has a program where residential consumers can opt in to purchase renewable electricity for a slight premium. This is important because it singles to the utility that there is demand for additional renewable capacity in the STL region. The cost in marginal as well.

I just sent out an e-mail to my supplier to see if I can switch to green energy supply! Great to hear that is possible at your area!
  • Reflection Question
Climate & Ecosystems Collect Litter on a Plog / Plalk
What was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Was there any item you collected that was unusual that you found?

It was a lovely evening in St. Louis so I went for a walk around the park near my home. I was actively looking for any trash or debris that did not belong during my walk and managed to gather a handful of wrappers, plastic bags, etc.. It was a nice way to spend a springtime evening and I hope to get out there again to do it soon.
  • Reflection Question
Basic Needs & Security Know Your Produce
What surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?

    Adam Glassl's avatar

I visited my local grocery store and requested details on where the produce is sourced from. I had options for produce that was sourced within a closer geographic proximity to my home and opted to purchase that for a premium.
