Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Action Track: Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 30 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Land + Forests
Compost Food Waste
Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Geraldine Gay 4/30/2024 9:02 AMI had a very good discussion with Lucie about this topic (thanks again for that !). Because I have the feeling to do a lot of thing to reduce my waste but never enough. And she told me everything is about finding your limit, which is really clever and I keep that in mind while doing my waste audit ! In the kitchen, I realise that we still waste a lot of food... I tried several times to plan my meal, but realising now how much food we waste, I will do my best to be more consistent in the planning. I also made an audit in the bathroom, and realised that I have a lot of products in double, but still buy new sometimes. Now I have a good inventory in my mind, and will think think twice before buying new products ! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Geraldine Gay 4/30/2024 8:56 AMSpoiler alert : I failed ! This is so difficult. There is so much waste everywhere. I feel like I need to buy more in bulk and to increase home-made (specially for my daugher's snack). I think the waste audit should help ! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Join a Cleanup EffortHow does working with others to clean up your community make you feel? What results did you see? Please consider posting a photo of your cleanup!
Geraldine Gay 4/26/2024 2:43 PMI challenged the Emerson running team beginning of the month : one run = one trash picked up from the ground ! This was also working by walking your dog or kids 😜 Some of them played the game ! I personally did it on a daily basis, while running or walking my dog. I used to see those waste on the ground, but didn’t do anything about it because why should I pick up others trash ? Now I feel very proud to show the example to my daughter and raise awareness around me, and will keep this habit. This is the hummingbird effect ! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Beauty and Personal ProductsWhat new insights did you gain about the skincare products you use? Did you reach out to advocate for refillable or recyclable packaging?
Geraldine Gay 4/26/2024 2:21 PMI’ve made the inventory of skincare products that I used, and look for ways to reduce their numbers and even found good alternatives with recyclable packaging, after some research!-
Glenda Harrison 4/26/2024 2:37 PMCongratulations! I find myself using less these days, and I am careful to use less packaging too, but I'm also careful of what is in the products I purchase!
