Oana's actions
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 240 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking Oil Disposal
Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Climate + Air
Calculate My Carbon Impact
Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Oana Onet 4/24/2024 1:16 AMWhat was hard? actually all the day was hard...:D Either you finish your toothpaste and you have the plastic, either you realize your deodorant it will end as a waste.. Even the eggs you eat are in a carton box.. I find it difficult to buy things that don't leave a waste at the end. I think these consuming trend has to change also starting from the main products sellers. I've noticed for example cosmetics in Carton instead of plastic and i really appreciated it. Anyway after this one day i am more aware of how to buy things from now on, to try to find alternatives ! -
Oana Onet 4/23/2024 12:26 AMThis weekend I ran in the park near by , it's a very interesting urban park, an old military barrack from 1st world war that was transformed into an urban park, where you can have a picnic, play sports, and even roller skating , during summer it's full and quite a nice ambiance :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Oana Onet 4/17/2024 7:54 AMWell... it doesn't look promising :D it's just for one day and still i have in the fridge vegetables in plastics, raspberries in plastic, milk, fruit juice in plastic... I have the impression it's not an easy task to reduce all this waste, specially when in the supermarkets almost everything is in plastic or some kind of protection. Time will tell, as a consumer I can try to reduce but I think the food industries need to find also an alternative containers or protections for the food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Oana Onet 4/17/2024 6:34 AMIt has been in 2 ways, first I borrowed from a friend un "Cocotte minute", as I don have it and really I am using it like once per year even less, so it was great to do it and not but one! and this week I borrowed to a friend my luggage, like this she was able not to buy one, as she doesn't need it that often. I think we can really find ways to reduce our consumption and to share things between us, is just an exercise of reflection on How to! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Use Reusable BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Oana Onet 4/10/2024 1:29 AMActually it's not an obvious challenge, we are so used to receive bags, or single use bags that we don't even realize how much we consume ! Now, each time I go to the groceries shops I calculate bags consuming not money spending haha :D -
Oana Onet 4/09/2024 6:31 AMThis weekend we did a hike of 15 km around a mountain lake (Nantua), and for a distance of more than 3 km in a forest, we found and fought a lot of caterpillars that were hanging from the trees, we have never seen something like this before. I admit i found it grouse and scary in a way :)) so i was wondering why on earth are so many, specially they were destroying the leaves! When i got back home i started to search and understand the purpose of caterpillars beside the sweet butterflies :) here is a peace of information! We need them on our Earth even if they are disgusting ! Don't hesitate to do your research : Caterpillars play a significant role in ecosystems as they are an essential part of the food chain, serving as a food source for various animals. Additionally, some caterpillar species contribute to pollination and help maintain biodiversity. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Oana Onet 4/07/2024 11:15 AMThis time during the weekend i was discovering surroundings between the 2 rivers in the city i live. It was great to see the boats around (peniches), to see the nature blooming on the hills and also to see the level of water now in spring that is quite considering high level. Nature is always a good idea, no matter on what form, We are blessed to be able to see all these beautiful nature life around. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Cooking Oil DisposalDid anything about this action surprise you? Do you use more or less oil than you thought?
Oana Onet 4/05/2024 4:53 AMActually, i use less oil than i imagined, specially for health reasons. It's interesting to see where it goes all this oils residues , for us is so natural or normal to throw it away without thinking, it's a very interesting lesson!
