Ginny's actions

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

ELBOW GREASE, NOT PESTICIDES

I will remove weeds by hand instead of using weed killer to protect bees

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 21
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

Eggplant is the vegetable with the lowest carbon footprint. It is also the least appetizing to me. LOL

I do love eggplants in a veggie lasagna!

I agree with the least appetizing but I did not know it was the lowest🌎💚

Needed to drop a package off at UPS, also needed to go for a run. Did both! Win-win.

Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

Plastic plackers, ugh! I discovered these compostable alternatives: https://shop.freetheocean.com/products/biodegradable-dental-floss-picks?currency=USD&variant=48486680002834&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=6ded308fd612&gad_source=5&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4NW30pThhQMVyCStBh1Ingt9EAQYAyABEgLEePD_BwE

I picked up about 15 plastic Plackers off the sidewalk today. Another example of unnecessary plastic use that often ends up in the environment.

Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

    Learned this today:
"Plant-based meat substitutes have smaller GHG footprints than most farmed meats and cell-based meat, but wild tuna (1.2kg), insects (0.9kg), tofu (1.2kg) and less processed pulses (0.4kg) and peas (0.3kg) have the lowest footprints of all protein-rich foods."

Think I'll be eating more wild tuna and tofu. Maybe not insects. LOL

I wonder what a less processed pulse is? Like not a can of beans but just dry beans?

As part of my effort to reduce plastic use, I make sure to recycle whatever plastic I can't avoid. Today, I emailed New Seasons to make sure that the #1 clear plastic and soft plastic that I drop off every week is in fact getting recycled.
