Ginny's actions
Action Track: Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 3 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
ELBOW GREASE, NOT PESTICIDES
I will remove weeds by hand instead of using weed killer to protect bees
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Ginny Figlar 4/26/2024 5:42 PMPlastic plackers, ugh! I discovered these compostable alternatives: https://shop.freetheocean.com/products/biodegradable-dental-floss-picks?currency=USD&variant=48486680002834&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=6ded308fd612&gad_source=5&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4NW30pThhQMVyCStBh1Ingt9EAQYAyABEgLEePD_BwE -

I picked up about 15 plastic Plackers off the sidewalk today. Another example of unnecessary plastic use that often ends up in the environment. -

Cleaned up a lot of glass and cigarette butts on the Burnside Bridge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Ginny Figlar 4/18/2024 6:58 AMLearned this today:"Plant-based meat substitutes have smaller GHG footprints than most farmed meats and cell-based meat, but wild tuna (1.2kg), insects (0.9kg), tofu (1.2kg) and less processed pulses (0.4kg) and peas (0.3kg) have the lowest footprints of all protein-rich foods."
Think I'll be eating more wild tuna and tofu. Maybe not insects. LOL-
Mary Frigo 4/18/2024 7:19 AMI wonder what a less processed pulse is? Like not a can of beans but just dry beans?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Ginny Figlar 4/12/2024 5:31 PMIt makes me feel like I’m doing my part. I meet lots of neighbors when I’m out there, too!-
Cyryl Cynthia Oblepias 4/12/2024 6:27 PMIn my own little ways I became more responsible even if it is not my trash to clean

Ginny Figlar 4/04/2024 1:35 PMAs part of my effort to reduce plastic use, I make sure to recycle whatever plastic I can't avoid. Today, I emailed New Seasons to make sure that the #1 clear plastic and soft plastic that I drop off every week is in fact getting recycled.
