Stefana's actions
Land + Forests
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 120 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 8 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Use Reusable Bags
Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Climate + Air
Weekly Meal Planning
One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
Plant Trees
Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 5 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Sustainability Lunch and LearnWho did you engage in your lunch and learn? What resources did you use? How did it go and what did you learn?
Stefana Fabian 4/23/2024 11:46 AMWe had a team lunch&learn session where we exchanged ideas focusing on healthy recipes for kids and not only 😊 This meeting also helped us bond and learn more about one another, our sustainability goals and even plan for an outdoor team activity in May. -
Stefana Fabian 4/22/2024 9:38 PMNot much else to add, looking forward for the weekend to explore other areas close to Cluj and admire such beauty.-
Anamaria Dragoste 4/22/2024 10:24 PMWhat a relaxing picture, Stefana! Looking also for the weekend as I'm planning a visit to my grandma and the landscape around her house looks similar to the one you shown here.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Borrow Before I BuyHow did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?
Stefana Fabian 4/09/2024 8:44 AMI discovered how well this system works as a new parent more than 10 years ago when friends, neighbors, colleagues, people I hardly knew had something to offer which came in useful - e.g. baby scale, baby monitor, crib, clothes which were mostly new as babies grow so fast they cannot wear them all :) In turn I do the same and kept this going as years pass by and I admit for me it is rewarding and brings immense joy to give and share with others. My children were raised with this mindset of giving what they no longer need to others, as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
Stefana Fabian 4/08/2024 10:45 PMI cannot believe a statement read the other day indicating humans currently produce more than 350 million metric tons of plastic waste per year.
In my household, we actively work on eliminating plastic as much as possible, or replacing with biodegradable items, but we still have a long way ahead.
One thing worth mentioning also is an example from my son's school: one of the parents build wooden drawers for the children to store their books and stationery, to avoid using the traditional plastic boxes. -
Stefana Fabian 4/08/2024 6:51 AMIt's such a beautiful day that after school my daughter went straight to her grandparents to plant the Magnolia tree. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Explore My AreaWhere did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?
Stefana Fabian 4/08/2024 6:26 AMTogether with my kids we visited the Jibou Botanical Garden. It is immensely beautiful during this time of the year and we enjoyed a lot being outdoors, admiring nature's beauty and the festival of colors around.-
Iosif Vernes 4/08/2024 6:28 AMThis period of the year where tree are blossom it's really great for everyone's eyes.
