Soil and Food
Learn About Sustainable Farming Practices
Healthy soils and resilient food systems depend on how we grow food. I will spend 15 minutes learning about farming practices such as regenerative agriculture, agroecology, or permaculture, and reflect on how they support both people and the planet.
What is resilience?
Learn About Ordinary Magic
Resilience is an everyday magic in all of us. I will spend 15 minutes learning about resilience and psychologist Ann Masten’s concept of “ordinary magic,” which shows how people adapt and thrive through small, daily strengths.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Mulching helps soil hold water and reduces runoff. I will mulch the base of trees or other plants at home, school, or in my community to improve water retention and soil health.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Personal
Write in a Resilience Journal
Reflection helps us adapt and grow. I will spend 10 minutes writing in a journal about challenges I face, the strengths I use, and what helps me thrive.
Soil and Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 2 meatless meals meals each day.
Water
Collect Rain Water
Rainwater collection reduces water waste and supports local needs. I will install a rain barrel or collect rainwater to use for outdoor tasks, such as watering plants or cleaning.
Soil and Food
Grow Something to Eat
Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.
Personal
Go Get a Check Up
Regular health check-ups help prevent problems before they start. I will schedule or attend a medical, dental, or mental health check-up to take care of my well-being.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Leave the Leaves
Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.
Biodiversity and Wildlife
Choose Native Plants
Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.
Take the Pre-Survey
Take the Pre-Event Survey
I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)
Action Track
Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues
Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.
Action Track
Participate in a Habitat Restoration Project
Healthy habitats support resilient wildlife populations. I will join 1 restoration efforts, such as planting native plants, cleaning a natural area, or repairing trails to protect biodiversity.
What is resilience?
Share a Definition of Resilience
Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 3 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.
What is resilience?
Share a Resilience Story
Stories connect and inspire us. I will share 3 resilience stories—either from my life, my community, or from a leader or culture I admire—through conversations, social media, or the event feed to help others see resilience in action.
Water
Create My Own Water Action
Everyone’s water needs and use are different. I will create an action that works for my life and supports water resilience—and make my commitment public by sharing it in the feed to inspire others.
Community
Take Part in a Community Beautification Project
Working together builds resilience and pride in the places we care about. I will participate in 1 community projects such as a cleanup or local beautification project that strengthens connections and shared purpose.
Community
Join a Group
Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.
Community
Swap and Share with Others
Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 1 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Community
Offer a Skill or Service
Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services that contribute to local self-sufficiency, such as teaching a repair skill or helping with a neighbor's garden.
Community
Host a Gathering
Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.
Soil and Food
Compost My Food Waste
Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.
Work and Organizations
Map Local Risks and Resources
Preparedness is part of resilience. I will spend 5 minutes with colleagues identifying potential risks (such as weather, supply chain, or staffing issues) and the resources or strategies available to address them.
Work and Organizations
Join or Start a Green Team
Green teams strengthen resilience by creating shared responsibility. I will join or help start a green team in my workplace, school, or community group to support sustainability and collaboration.

Reihaneh Etemadi 4/29/2026 6:19 AMStop Food Waste Day is held annually on the last Wednesday of April (April 29, 2026) to raise awareness and inspire action against the 33% of global food produced that is lost or wasted.Let’s make every day a Stop Food Waste Day!Did you know, 33% of all food produced globally is lost or wasted every single year? And just a quarter of the food wasted globally could be used to feed the 795 million undernourished people in the world.Food waste and climate changeBut food waste is not only a moral issue, it’s a key contributor to climate change too. Wasting food is a waste of the energy to grow, harvest, process and cook and food waste in landfill can cause methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas. -

Reihaneh Etemadi 4/27/2026 8:11 AMToday is "National Tell A Story Day". It provides a unique opportunity to combine the art of storytelling with the urgent need for environmental protection. By sharing narratives about nature, conservation, and the impact of human actions, we can foster empathy and inspire action to protect the planet and Ecochallenge is a great example!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONPersonalHow did reflecting on your experiences, strengths, or challenges shape the way you think about your ability to adapt and grow?
Reihaneh Etemadi 4/24/2026 8:20 AMReflecting on experiences, strengths, and challenges shapes the ability to adapt and grow by transforming passive experiences into active learning, building resilience, and fostering a growth mindset. By analyzing past successes and failures, individuals can identify patterns, recognize their potential, and intentionally adjust their strategies for future challenges. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWhat is resilience? What stood out to you about the idea of “ordinary magic”? How can one use a small, everyday strength to better handle a challenge this week?
Reihaneh Etemadi 4/24/2026 8:17 AM"Ordinary magic" highlights that resilience isn't extraordinary, but rather the result of small, everyday human strengths—like connection, routine, and quiet kindness—that help us grow through tough times. It’s the profound idea that simple, mundane moments and internal strengths are the primary tools for building a meaningful life. -
