Isabelle's actions
Action Track: Community
Phone a Friend
I will share some information on the ethics of proper environnemental advocacy.
Action Track: Community
Ocean Promotion!
I will share some information about proper awareness for the conservation of freshwater and oceans.
Land + Forests
Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
It's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Climate + Air
Choose Renewable Energy
Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 15 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Leave No Trace
I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.
Climate + Air
Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.
Land + Forests
Carry My Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 15 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 30 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 15 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 15 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 15 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Land + Forests
Explore My Area
When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 180 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).
Freshwater + Oceans
Cooking cooking oil
I will learn about properly disposing cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.
Action Track: Community
No Litter Here!
I will pick up trash on the side of the road if I see it!
Freshwater + Oceans
Water Justice
I will spend 30 minutes learning about water justice in my community.
Action Track: Community
Creating a network
I will find an interested community and share some information I have regarding planet-friendly policies.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Isabelle Ede 4/29/2024 11:08 AMThis site gives great insight of consumer behaviour in Canada: https://www.statista.com/topics/10493/consumer-behavior-in-canada/#topicOverview. As for me, I think I am part of the privileged capitalist consumer in these stats, thus affecting the health of wildlife and other communities without even realizing it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Leave No TraceEducator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?
Isabelle Ede 4/29/2024 10:47 AMIn the past, I have completed a funded awareness campaign project, advocating for proper waste sorting management on campus. That is definitely one domain in which I gravitate towards, but I am also interested in researching and protesting against corporations who are heavily contributing to the climate crisis. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Choose Renewable EnergyIf you are already signed up for your utility's renewable option, what other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If your company doesn't offer a renewable option, were they open to your request of this in the future?
Isabelle Ede 4/29/2024 6:31 AMI cook a lot in my home and I have optimized my process of cooking by changing the order of things and space on the pan etc. I am becoming more and more conscious of how much energy I use a day. I'll start tackling light bulbs soon! -
Isabelle Ede 4/29/2024 6:14 AMThe month is almost over, but my behaviours will prevail!-
Melissa Tomecz 4/29/2024 6:57 PMThat's the best thing about this challenge :) -

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Isabelle Ede 4/28/2024 12:16 PMI did find it difficult to have a Zero Waste Day, because I realized how often we use plastic in our lives! I do not think that our plastic-dependent world can sustain a Zero Waste everyday-
Melissa Tomecz 4/28/2024 6:13 PMThis is why we need to change how companies are packaging their products.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Declutter My Home Without the LandfillHow did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?
Isabelle Ede 4/26/2024 6:46 AMI did a big cleanup yesterday and found loads of clothes to repurpose! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water BottleWhat did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?
-
Melissa Tomecz 4/26/2024 3:13 PMI always use my reusable water bottle and use mugs and thermoses for my coffee too!

Isabelle Ede 4/26/2024 6:38 AMA little chilly this morning, but its gonna warm up! Summer is here!! -
Isabelle Ede 4/25/2024 8:45 AMI dont think environmental activists can properly call themselves activists without educating themselves or actively advocating for the Palestinian people of Gaza. Whether they want to approach this genocidal ethnic cleansing from an environmentalist and existentialist perspective or simply from a humanitarian perspective, all activism is good activism. I am writing this because I feel inspired and empowered by the current student protests happening across North America (the Canadian McGill university included!) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Save the BeesWhat did you plant for bees in your area? Please consider uploading a photo!
Isabelle Ede 4/25/2024 8:40 AMI am unable to plant, yet I have researched the best pollinator flowers to plant! Common milkweed, Hairy beardtongue, Heart-leaved aster, Seaside goldenrod and Pearly everlasting are the best to consider for they are the better pollinators native to Quebec.
