Sheila's actions

Community and Connection

Keep My Community Clean

A clean community benefits everyone. Each day I am outside, I will pick up 5 pieces of litter to keep my community clean.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Health and Well-Being

Declutter and Donate

Decluttering can reduce stress and benefit others. I will declutter my home and donate items I no longer need to support others in my community.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Take Shorter Showers

Conserving water helps protect this precious resource. I will shorten my showers to 5 minutes to save water and reduce energy use - each time saving up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water!

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Community and Connection

Join a Group

Belonging to a group can help build friendships and a sense of purpose. I will explore online or in-person groups or clubs that share my interests or goals and join a group to connect with others.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Offer a Skill or Service

Sharing our talents can benefit those around us. I will offer my skills or services to support my community, such as helping someone with a task, tutoring, repairing something, or volunteering my expertise.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Swap and Share with Others

Swapping and sharing resources reduces waste and builds community bonds. I will participate in 5 swaps or sharing activities, like borrowing items, attending or hosting a swap meet, or giving away items I no longer need to support a sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Knowing our carbon footprint is the first step to reducing it. I will calculate my carbon impact and identify lifestyle changes that could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment. I will share my commitments to lowering my impact on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land, Water, and Air

Conduct a Home Energy Audit

Reducing energy use helps protect the air and climate. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy and reduce pollution.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
How did you participate in the sharing economy? (Consider posting a photo!) What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

I made donations to thrift establishments who help the homeless and/or handicapped. I also purchased books for youth to add to a couple of the little libraries in my area. I had discussions about my wasted time with a couple of my friends. They would never frequent these places. They also see volunteerism as a waste of time. One of them actually had to volunteer for a church project. She had an interesting take on her whole experience.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
What skill or service did you offer, and how did it impact someone in your community? How did sharing your expertise or time help you feel more connected to others?

I take older people places. Grocery store, appointments, church. It's easy to see myself needing help in the future. Some of these folks show me how to age gracefully and accept help. I also practice Random acts of kindness at the zoo. That's helping people find their way, advise people with wheels the best way to avoid stairs, and take pictures so everyone can be in the picture. I had a stressful social work job previously, so seeing families have fun together is very rewarding to see.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community and Connection
How did keeping your community more clean connect you more to your local area? Did picking up litter change your perspective on the cleanliness of your community?

Lots of construction in park, low # of people so have to walk farther to get stuff to pick up. Interesting dynamic. Met more people on wider route! Also handed out some paper recyclable doggie poop bags. People didn't kow that they were available!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health and Well-Being
How did decluttering and donating items make you feel, both emotionally and physically?

I donate at several different organizations since only creepy people answered me on by nothing/fb. I make 5 stops per week not counting little libraries. Then I treat myself to something sweet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did changing your dishwashing habits make you more mindful of water use? What other small changes can you make to conserve water in your household?

l have started using fabric napkins instead of plates. Loads of laundry not increased, not sure how much water conserved, but some.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land, Water, and Air
How did shortening your showers affect your awareness of water conservation? What other water-saving practices can you adopt in your daily routine?

I changed the shower head along with shorter showers. The shower head cut the amount of water by an estimated 30%. I have also changed my garden to square foot gardening. This allows me to water only targeted plants with an irrigation system that I start only on days that water needs to go to plants. I will be emptying the water barrel first, then watering from public sources.
