Chris's actions

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Soil and Food

Compost My Food Waste

Composting turns waste into a resource, building soil health and cutting methane emissions from landfills. I will compost food scraps at home, school, or in my community, which avoids sending up to 0.42 lbs (0.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Write in a Resilience Journal

Reflection helps us adapt and grow. I will spend 20 minutes writing in a journal about challenges I face, the strengths I use, and what helps me thrive.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Exercise Daily

Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Learn About Local Keystone Species

Some species are especially important because they help keep whole ecosystems in balance. I will spend 5 minutes learning about a keystone species near me and how it supports biodiversity and resilience.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Leave the Leaves

Fallen leaves, logs, and brush provide shelter and food for wildlife. I will leave natural features in my yard or community space to help strengthen biodiversity and soil resilience.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Work and Organizations

Reduce Waste in My Organization

Waste reduction supports both ecological and organizational resilience. I will work with others to conduct a waste audit and reduce waste in my organization, such as paper, plastics, or energy use.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Host a Gathering

Bringing people together helps strengthen bonds. I will organize and host a gathering, such as a potluck, coffee meet up, or shared meal, for friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to foster connection and community spirit.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Choose Native Plants

Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife and help ecosystems adapt to change. I will choose native plants for my yard, balcony, or community space instead of non-native or ornamental species to support biodiversity resilience.

    Biodiversity and Wildlife
What did you learn about the keystone species you chose, and how does it help keep the ecosystem around it in balance?

I learned about keystone species from this web page: What are keystone species, and why do they matter? | World Economic Forum

I'm pleased to learn that one of my favorite animal species, the sea otter, is a keystone species. They eat sea urchins, which keeps them from overfeeding on sea kelp forests. The sea kelp forests are home to many other species in the ecosystem. The cuteness of the Sea Otter is good enough to make sure they survive, but knowing that they are a keystone species makes it even more important to ensure these cute animals stick around.

Thank you for sharing this resource! One of my favorite animals is the North American River Otter and after looking it up I found that they are also a keystone species. In my local area, the population of river otters suffered a sharp decline in the early 1900s but have since made a resurgence due to successful conservation efforts!

How did reflecting on your experiences, strengths, or challenges shape the way you think about your ability to adapt and grow?

I keep a gratitude journal where I write down what I'm grateful for, how I will make today awesome, a positive affirmation, little things that made my day, lessons from the day and goals for tomorrow. I tape photos, quotes or bible verses that appeal to me that day, and I might even draw something, and other things like the receipt of today's Starbucks drink! I love journaling and reflecting back on how I was feeling during a past season. Acknowledging things that Im grateful for has definitely changed my life for the better.

I love this idea, I just ordered a new journal. I am going to have to give this a try.

I'm feeling the motivation to get back to training now that it's getting warmer outside. I love the breezy North Carolina Spring that adds a spring to my step. I decided to use a half marathon training plan from Garmin just to keep me on a schedule and routine.
I never regret a run. I love feeling stronger and more capable. I love the dopamine and endorphin release post run.
