Ioana's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 3 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 30 hours in my community.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Beauty and Personal Products
Beauty and personal products can create a lot of waste. I will spend 5 minutes learning about the beauty and body products I use to see if they are refillable or recyclable. If not, I will reach out to the manufacturer to advocate for those options.
Climate + Air
Stay on the Ground
Carbon emissions from air travel is harmful to planetary and human health. Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Land + Forests
Zero Waste Day
The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 3 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 5 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Freshwater + Oceans
Smart Seafood Choices
We need to support healthy seafood populations. I will spend 5 minutes learning about sustainable seafood choices, commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean, and share what I learned on the feed.
Freshwater + Oceans
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will organize or participate in a trash pickup at a local river, beach, or natural body of water.
Action Track: Community
JOIN OR CREATE A GREEN TEAM AT EMERSON
I will continue to contribute to Emerson's environmental sustainability goals beyond April by learning more about the Global Green Teams Network, joining a team near me, or maybe even creating a new team.
Action Track: Community
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE NEWS ON SUSTAINABILITY AT EMERSON
I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.
Action Track: Community
TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN
I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.
Action Track: Community
ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR
On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Reduce Animal Products
One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 2 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Invest in Nature
A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 5 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Climate + Air
Consume only Needs vs Wants
The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.
Climate + Air
Use Muscle Power
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Land + Forests
30 for 30 in Nature
Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.
Land + Forests
Personal Waste Audit
The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.
Action Track: Community
Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and Oceans
I will spend 10 minutes learning more about the importance of freshwater + ocean conservation, and how I can reduce my water use. I will share what I learn with people in person, on social media, and on the feed.
Action Track: Community
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Action Track: Community
Sustainability Lunch and Learn
Learning in a social setting can inspire connection and change. I will work with a friend or colleague to plan and host a lunch and learn at work, school, in my neighborhood or other location to learn more about an environmental topic important to me. After the lunch and learn, I will share more about it on the feed.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Ioana Bontas-Pop 4/25/2024 9:57 AMIoana, that is indeed a stark reminder that without a healthy planet, the economy has no place to stand. Let's keep prioritizing our environment in every decision we make. 🌍💚#SustainabilityFirst -

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINARWhat did you learn in the webinar? Did anything surprise you?
Ioana Blidarean 4/24/2024 8:06 AMI did learn a lot and enjoy it! Very good content which kept me engaged during the entire meeting. I found interested the "Ego action" call from Brooke. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Community Raise Awareness for the Conservation of Freshwater and OceansWhat did you learn about freshwater and oceans you did not already know? In sharing this information with people in your life, which conversation was impactful to you?
Ioana Blidarean 4/24/2024 7:13 AMI've noted some "Did you know" impactful facts, not only for me but for my family witch I shared with. A shortened list is below:- 1 out of 8 people lacks access to clean water
- 46% of people on Earth do not have water pipped to their homes
- women in developing countries walk an average of 6 km/day to get water
- 3.3 million people die every year from water-related health problems.
Feeling grateful for what I have but humble, too.-
Daniela Embree 4/25/2024 1:33 PMIt really is mind-boggling that in the 21st century the facts listed above are still true... :(
I donate to a charity called simply 'charity: water' and try to make a small difference.

Ioana Blidarean 4/24/2024 1:25 AMDay 24 reflection quote: "There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be more" (Gaylord Nelson - American politician, Founder of Earth Day).

Ioana Blidarean 4/23/2024 4:42 AMDay 23rd reflection quote: " Our life is frittered away by detail... Simplify, simplify, simplify! Simplicity of life and elevation of purpose" (Henry Thoreau - American philosopher, poet, environmental scientist, and political activist). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Zero Waste DayWhat was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?
Ioana Blidarean 4/23/2024 4:35 AMThe hardest was to realize that most of my needs are in the consume zone, consume that translates in a lot of waste. My Zero Waste Day was an extreme experience lived in the countryside, in the middle of nature, where I found easier to balance needs vs wishes, and to calibrate consume based on zero waste concept.-
Dorothea Sypien 4/24/2024 1:05 AMI think it's great that you tried the Zero Waste Day! Congrats!
I thought about it briefly and then shied away, as I thought it was too big of a challenge for me right now. Glad to see that you tackled it. -
Monica Mohan selvaraju 4/23/2024 4:36 AMIt was a great statement. Thanks to you I learnt something new.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Personal Waste AuditWhat are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?
Ioana Blidarean 4/22/2024 8:48 AMMost of the waste is created based on preferences and not on needs. Also, reducing waste needs some extra time allocation which we are not always willing for. It's so much comfort related! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Seek Alternative Gifts and SouvenirsHow do your consumption choices affect the health of wildlife and other communities?
Ioana Blidarean 4/22/2024 8:34 AMI've learned that our consumption habits fuel threats to biodiversity, —such as deforestation, overhunting and overfishing, thousands of miles away. Scientists have mapped how major consuming countries drive threats to endangered species elsewhere. Such maps could be useful for finding the most efficient ways to protect critical areas important for biodiversity. Researchers identified 6,803 threatened species and pinpointed the commodities that contribute to various threats affecting those species. Then they traced the implicated commodities to their final consumers in 187 countries using a global trade model. The resulting maps can tell which countries and which commodities, threaten species at the various hotspots. -
Ioana Blidarean 4/22/2024 7:20 AMDay 22 reflection quote: "Why pay money for the horror movies? Just go to a street without trees!" (Mehmet Murat Ildan - Turkish playwright, novelist and thinker).-
Daniela Embree 4/22/2024 2:20 PMI've never heard this. Pretty scary really, but what a powerful statement! -
