Audit Toxic Products in my Home

Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 60 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Wildlife

Protect Pollinators with a Plant or Mini-Habitat

Pollinators need a little help from their friends like us! I will take 4 steps to protect pollinators, such as planting a pollinator-friendly plant, installing a pollinator hotel, or by leaving leaf litter for pollinators to call home.

COMPLETED 27
DAILY ACTIONS

Decluttering can reduce stress and benefit others. I will declutter my home and donate items I no longer need to support others in my community.

COMPLETED 26
DAILY ACTIONS

Land, Water, and Air

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community and Connection

Share Information about Local Resources

Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sustainable Innovation

Donate to or Support Low-Income Solar Initiatives

Clean energy should be accessible to all. I will support, donate, or volunteer to help programs that bring solar energy to low-income communities, helping create a more equitable and sustainable future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health and Well-Being

Enjoy the Outdoors for 30 Minutes

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside, then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 30

It has been a busy and stressful April for me, and I have not succeeded with EcoChallenge as I would have liked and have not managed to complete all my daily challenges every day. Still, in looking back over the month I have accomplished quite a bit and have made more than a few good habits.

I really enjoyed your posts this month and participating on my first EcoChallenge. It perked me up when I got in late from picking garlic mustard each day. It feels good to know others are out there fighting for Mother Nature too. I learned alot from your posts too. Thanks for being the team lead!

I spent all day yesterday at the Green Columbus Earth Day Celebration, and was able network with people from many of the organizations I have worked with for a while (and a couple ones that were new to me). It was well attended, and so I got to talk with many people passing by the Simply Living table! I must express my gratitude to all the Green Columbus volunteers who put on the event.

Green Columbus certainly makes a big impact each April. If anyone wants to donate so that the good work continues in 2026, here's a link https://www.greencbus.org/donations.

I have been working diligently to turn my grass lawn into a seed bed for a bee/clover seed mix, and today I finally sowed the seed! It's such a relief to be done with it! Rain is in the forecast for the next three days, so my timing should be good. I'm hoping to have a good stand this summer to support bees & other pollinators!

I just spent a few minutes looking up images on bee/clover lawns! Pretty interesting and definitely seems like an improvement over conventional lawn. I would love to see before/after and article in SL newsletter.

I completed 60 minutes of research on non-toxic home products and conducted an audit of products in my home. This is a something I have been concerned with for a while, so I found only one old bottle of industrial cleaner/degreaser (almost empty) to dispose of. I still use chlorine bleach on my white shirts, but I haven't found an alternative product that works nearly as well. Still looking. (I'd like to get rid of my white shirts, but they are required where I work). My expression of gratitude today is to the guys who pick up my trash to be recycled. Thanks to advances by my local waste management agencies, I produce only one small bag every other week that needs to go to the landfill.

I'm still working to convert my yard to pollinator habitat, tearing up turf to replant pollinator-friendly seed mix. Very hard work. My neighbors stop by to see what I'm up to. They think I'm crazy but are tolerant. And some, when I explain, approve of my actions. I'm grateful to have such good neighbors.

Today, I made a donation to Green Schools Alliance, which provides programs, tools, and resources to fast-track sustainable solutions in schools, empowering all members of the school community to become sustainability champions. I also contributed to my local school district's Education Foundation, which manages and distributes funds for educational activities that may not otherwise be funded. My expression of gratitude today is to all schoolteachers everywhere for the important work they do.

What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

My water footprint is a bit less than the average, which surprised me since I have a large lot with lots of grass. I'm looking forward to using much less water when I convert to a pollinator-friendly lawn, which will require much less watering (and mowing). It was interesting to learn about "virtual" water use, incidental to driving, eating, and living in general.

I have spent a couple hours now researching indigenous conservation practices, and have been very impressed with this ancient wisdom, and also impressed with how modern society is beginning to recognize its value. There is a great deal of information available, and I am looking forward to learning much more by the end of the month.

Monday is the day I volunteer at a local food pantry, and I want to recognize and express my gratitude to all the volunteers that I work with there. And I also need to express my concern for what is happening now--the funding reductions at both the federal and state levels are already being felt. It is going to be a hungry summer for many in our community.

I suggest contacting your elected officials to express your concerns about these funding cuts, and explain their impact on your community.
