Alcino Beirao 4/26/2025 2:17 PM30 years ago, I started on my very first Industrial Automation project. A compressor control system for an Ethylene cracker complex. Today I spent an amazing day discovering the world outside the refinery, petrochemical complex. I worked in this area more than 5 years and had never explored the region. It happens a lot in our business, you travel to many countries or places and sometimes all you see are the hotels, airports and plants/offices. Will leave you with some images of the almost 12km hiked today.

Alcino Beirao 4/25/2025 7:51 AMWishing all a great weekend. Today is a special date in Portugal. 51 years ago in 1974 we did away with a dictatorship and embraced democracy. With all the disinformation going round, it feels like we are again on the cusp of new upheavals. I heard someone this morning talking about freedom and rights that have been earned, but must be maintained. There is a lot of retoric that plays on people’s fears, but provides no solution, that questions logic and science in favour of visions for the future. We can only hope and work individually towards a brighter future for future generations.-

I switched from pods back to a "liquid" dishwasher soap. I worry about the microplastics in the polyvinyl alcohol in the sheets! Its kind of a no win, but at least the dishwasher is saving water! -

Alcino Beirao 4/24/2025 5:52 AMI remember once watching a BBC documentary, many, many years back (>30) where they showed how small individual actions, over time help save energy consumption. The example was boiling water with the pot covered vs. not covered. The savings are infinitessimal, but multiply that by the total number of days in a year and by the number of households and that number quickly becomes significant. That single documentary changed my perspectives on energy savings and since then, I've always tried to be responsible, put in practise what I learn and educate those around me. This is one of the main reasons for joining this initiative. I find it very fulfilling and educational. No such thing as you can't teach an old dog new tricks.-

Alcino Beirao 4/11/2025 9:48 AMAmazing when you read or listen to the news, that there are still sceptics on climate change. In a 1 week span in Portugal, we went from storm front Nuria with winds in excess of 150km/h and temperatures in the low teens to a spring weekend with the beaches full (incl. 3 drownings) and temp in the low twenties, to the weel starting with hot winds from the Sahara (and red dust) pushing the temp to high twenties and 30 in some places and now for the weekend we have storm Oliver coming in with temp dropping to low teens again, rain, hail et al. How crazy is this!
Wishing all a great weekend!-
