Janet 's actions

Personal

Prepare for Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods can disrupt lives and upend our communities. I will take proactive steps to prepare for extreme weather by safeguarding my home and creating or updating an emergency plan and kit with essential supplies, evacuation routes, and contact information.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity and Wildlife

Speak Up for Wildlife Protection

Wildlife needs support from people. I will take 2 actions, such as volunteering, signing petitions, contacting leaders, or sharing information on social media, to help protect habitats and species.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Sharing builds common understanding. I will share 1 definitions of resilience that resonate with me—through conversations, social media, or the event feed—to help others explore what resilience means.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Donate to Support Wildlife

There are many amazing projects supporting wildlife and their habitats. I will choose a project or organization to support that helps species and habitats I care about and make a donation.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Take the Pre-Survey

Take the Pre-Event Survey

I’ll take a short pre-survey to share what motivated me to join — and earn 15 points! (If I already took the survey by email, I’ll just mark this action complete to get my points.)

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Work and Organizations

Recognize Someone’s Contribution

Recognition strengthens trust and connection. I will recognize 1 people in my organization for their contributions, showing appreciation that helps build resilience and morale.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Eat Local and Seasonal Foods

Local and seasonal foods require fewer resources, support nearby farmers, and keep soils healthier through diverse planting. I will source 2 meals per week from local or seasonal producers—such as markets, CSAs, or co-ops—to strengthen community food resilience.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Personal

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 15 minutes of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Soil and Food

Grow Something to Eat

Growing food builds resilience by connecting us to the soil and reducing reliance on long supply chains. I will grow edible plants—such as herbs, vegetables, or grains—in my home, balcony, or community space, strengthening both my food security and local biodiversity.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

What is resilience?

Explore Resilience in Nature

Resilience is all around us in the natural world. I will spend 10 minutes outdoors looking for examples of resilience—such as plants regrowing, animals adapting, or seasonal cycles—and reflect on what they teach about thriving through change.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Work and Organizations

Host a Cleanup Event with Colleagues

Shared projects at work strengthen teams and build organizational resilience. I will host or join 1 cleanup events with colleagues, classmates, or group members to improve our environment and strengthen collaboration.

So much easier when it's nice out vs. when it's rainy up in Portland. Doesn't help that the weather keeps changing but I try!

We did the campus waste audit this week, and on the first day found that 35% of the trash pulled could have been recycled. I don't have the final numbers yet, but we know there is awareness work to be done.

Wow 35% is a lot! It's interesting that there's not enough awareness of what can be recycled and what can't. I recently learned that some kinds of plastic cannot be recycled and have been more careful of what I'm putting into the recycling bin.

Working on cleanup in my prairie garden, and realized this was a perfect example of resilience. No matter how many time I cut back two volunteer mulberry trees, back they come. Pruning “rules” say to never take more than 30% of any branches off or the tree will die. “Rules” say that you can’t prune during sap season or the tree will die. “Rules” say that you can’t make jagged cuts or the tree will get infected and die. Mulberry trees just laugh at rules.

Think of the worst day of your life. It was hard, but here you are, learning and growing. Then think of the best day of your life. That joy and warm glow. Then think of the hundred in between. You have made it through every one. And every day teaches you something about love, loss, joy, peace, and kindness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did recognizing someone’s effort affect your relationship or team dynamic? How can appreciation strengthen trust and teamwork where you are?

Most people work doing a wonderful job, but when someone recognizes your work, even if it’s just what you do every day, it makes you feel appreciated. It makes a connection that says “I see what you do, and it’s important.” And when you deliberately look for things to comment on, they suddenly are much easier to find.

We are all just moving the needle a little bit to a better result. Every day go look at the impacts of what we are doing. Remind yourself that you matter, and even if it's just picking up one piece of trash, being present for one person to let them see how amazing they are, how strong, and how important- that all moves us closer to sustainability as a species.

Resilience is the ability to persevere. In an ecosystem, it's recovery or evolution. For our planet, it's the way the Earth continues, with our without life. The Earth has managed to survive life killing catastrophes in the past. It will bounce back from this one. Humans may not, because we may not have the resilience needed. One a tiny scale it's each of us overcoming barriers every day, learning from our mistakes, helping each other, and just trying to improve as humans.
