Hillary's actions
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Protect Pollinators with a Pen
I will earn about the issue of neonicotinoid pesticides and how they are threatening bee populaitons. Then I will write a letter to someone influential to help reduce the use of neonicotinoids and help reduce bee colony die-offs.
Freshwater + Oceans
Go Plastic-Free
Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.
Action Track: Community
Borrow Before I Buy
Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Native species
I will spend 30 minutes learning about native species in my area, how to support them, and especially learning why they are important to the ecosystem.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Endangered Species
Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs
When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Plastic in Clothing and Water
Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.
Biodiversity + Wildlife
Save the Bees
Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.
Climate + Air
Low Carbon Diet
Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.
Land + Forests
Darning -repair
I will repair 2 items of clothing by darning, so that I can continue to use them and not have to buy new ones
Land + Forests
Regenerative Agriculture and Me
Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 30 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.
Land + Forests
Forest-Friendly Foods
I will look for sustainable palm oil products with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSP) label. I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation and opt for ones that help sustain healthy communities and forests.
Land + Forests
Keep My Community Clean
At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.
Freshwater + Oceans
Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 20 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.
Freshwater + Oceans
Dishwasher Efficiency
Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Hillary Tejada 4/28/2024 11:12 PMTwo more days - its been great to get back into the walking and picking up garbage habit. Spent a lot of time looking into the marine aquarium trade today - a complicated issue balancing local needs, hobbyists' ability to raise awareness, and all the other challenges to the reefs. like climate change, flooding, ocean acidifcation. Did not know that anemones bleach just like corals! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBiodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and WaterHow did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?
Hillary Tejada 4/28/2024 11:08 PMI am going to buy 2 guppyfriend laundry bags. The filter option might not fit behind my machine, the cora ball will tangle things. The last article listed in the "learn More' section was helpful and the author carefully reviews some of the research that has been done,-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFreshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-FreeWhere did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?
Hillary Tejada 4/22/2024 11:39 PMSingle use plastics show up a lot in my life in terms of ready-to-go salads for lunch They are easy and healthy, and better for me than buying a burger on the run. But each one comes with 3-5 pieces of plastic ( bowl, tray, film, fork) most of which cannot be recycled. I could of course pack my own salads, but it is hard to find the time. Another thing is individual Immunity Shots that come in small plastic containers. This is easier for me to find time to fix. I make my own at home and bring some to my family members as well, in 16 oz glass Bell Jars, so we all have enough for ten days, and no plastic is involved. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand + Forests Keep My Community CleanHow does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?
Hillary Tejada 4/21/2024 10:54 PMWhen I pick up litter, I hope others will be motivated to do the same. Plus, ehn I am out I can smile and say hi to the other people out walking.-
Mihály Varga 4/21/2024 11:01 PMI started to pick up litters on the front of my house on the street with the eco challenge, now I find myself on it that I pick up some garbage between my daughter's school and our house. -

Hillary Tejada 4/18/2024 11:20 PMOne thing the ecochallenge has been doing is it keeps encouraging me to get outside to take a walk. Today I did find lots of trash on the beach, but I also saw pelicans diving for fish and filmed a couple of them with my phone right when they were diving! It was cool! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate + Air Low Carbon DietWhich high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?
Hillary Tejada 4/18/2024 11:15 PMEating less beef, and today replaced meat with mushrooms - a very sustainable food. Mushrooms have very low carbon footprint and water footprint. Baked them with a little olive oil and tossed shome blue cheese on top at the end.-

Hillary Tejada 4/17/2024 9:26 PMI was gob-smacked by family matters this week, so did not check in or do much for the EcoChallenge, but I will be back in form starting tomorrow, I hope! -
Hillary Tejada 4/12/2024 9:08 PMIt took a long time to compose an email to A Jassy, President of Amazon, urging him to take neonicotinoud pesticides off the shelves ahead of the 2025 California ban. I did not want to just parrot another an environmental website so I went and read some of the research. I also found that the EPA had a recent report that 1260 out 1700 species are likely to be adversely affected by one of the neonicotinoids, dinotefuran. So I referenced that and another article in my email. I asked for a response, and will post here if I get one. -
Hillary Tejada 4/11/2024 11:18 PMLearned about composting today from the "Queen of Compost"-
Marisa Denninger 4/13/2024 1:41 AMI learned from her as well! Talked to her about soil science and environmental health for a good 10 minutes. She is a very smart and passionate person
