Share Information about Local Resources
Knowledge of local resources helps communities thrive. I will learn about local resources, especially mutual aid groups, and share them with others on social media, in conversations, or in other ways that help spread the word.
Wildlife
Remove Invasive Species
Removing invasive species (species that are not naturally found in my area and can outcompete native plants) can help beautify nature around me and protect local biodiversity. One of my favorite things about Austin is all the environmental groups in the area. An organization I recently started volunteering with is Urban Roots ATX. They own and operate small farms in East and South Austin and employ high schoolers and college age students to teach them about agriculture, provide leadership opportunities, and create a community of passionate young people looking to make Austin a better, more welcoming place.
When you volunteer, the youth leaders teach you about how to grow and pick produce, how to improve soil health, and how to maintain and use compost. I left with a much deeper appreciation for the earth and the work that goes into growing produce (and with some delicious dinosaur kale and collard greens :).
What's an environmental group you enjoy or want to volunteer at? Any recommendations for orgs the Emerson Austin Green Team should work and/or volunteer with? -
