Save Water When Washing Dishes

Dishwashers can save water — if used wisely. I will only run the dishwasher when it’s full and skip the pre-rinse to reduce water and energy use. If I don't have a dishwasher, I will turn off the tap as often as possible while washing dishes.

COMPLETED 30
DAILY ACTIONS

Reduce Food Waste

Wasting food also wastes water, energy, and resources. I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation, and commit to reducing my food waste throughout the challenge.

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

Last year, during Ecochallenge 2024, we organized a group clean-up, and it was a great experience. I picked up several bottles at the beach that could have been properly disposed of.
This year, our beach clean-up is scheduled to take place in a few days (we had to move our plans forward due to an ongoing event at the beach), and I'm really looking forward to it.

One of the ways I prepare for extreme weather like floods is by keeping the environment clean and tidy. Proper waste disposal helps prevent blocked drainage systems, which can reduce the risk of flooding in our communities.

I chose to purchase an 8W LED bulb instead of the commonly used 48W option, even though it was significantly more expensive. This decision aligns with my values, as the bulb is eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and emits no UV radiation.

What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

The most surprising realization for me was how much I enjoy the sound of running tap water, which unintentionally contributes to water waste, especially when doing the dishes. I've now started washing only full loads and being more mindful of water use, and it feels great.

I also plan to organize my laundry in advance rather than washing items one at a time. These small changes will help reduce the amount of water I consume with each use

Learning about the sacred site at the zoo showed me how closely nature and culture are connected.
Just like sacred sites, zoos help protect important parts of our world, preserving endangered species and educating us about conservation.

Protecting these spaces ensures we respect life and pass on vital knowledge to future generations.
