Paul's actions

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Consume only Needs vs Wants

The more stuff we consume, the more greenhouse gasses we put into the atmosphere. I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach this month and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 9 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

WRITE AN EMAIL TO PCC'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS

I will write an email to each member of Portland Community College's Board of Directors urging them to vote no on an upcoming revision to their Investment Standards and Practices policy. The new revision would weaken their original commitment to divest from fossil fuel interests.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I volunteered to pick up litter around the Gateway TriMet Station area with SOLVE on Sunday, 4/21/24. Picking up trash littered across public spaces helps keep these areas clean for all of us in the community to enjoy, and is a great way to stay connected and engaged with the communities we live in.

What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

Today, I discovered a park about 5 minutes away from home on Google Maps called Curtin Springs Wildlife Habitat. I happened to have the day off from work and with the weather blessing us with how nice it was, I decided to take my dad to this park to check it out. We walked around on the trails for about 30 minutes enjoying the weather and scenery, with the meadows, trees, and a clear view of Mt. Hood serving as the backdrop, and it was really quite nice! I realized that walking around in nature is a great way to get some light exercise, release stress, and take a breather from work or school.
