Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Low Carbon Diet

Carbon is emitted into the atmosphere in a variety of ways, including through the foods we eat and food we waste. I will learn about low carbon foods and replace higher carbon foods with them in my diet.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Regenerative Agriculture and Me

Regenerative agriculture focuses on farming and ranching in a way that supports life and restores the soil. I will spend 60 minutes learning about regenerative agriculture and find out if any nearby farms practice regenerative agriculture.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Personal Waste Audit

The waste we create daily can go unnoticed. I will track the waste I create in a day and post a photo log on the feed to see how much I create and where I can make different choices to reduce my waste going forward.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When marine wildlife ingest plastic, they have a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Cooking Oil Disposal

Pouring cooking oil down the drain can cause damage to waterways and ecosystems. I will learn how to properly dispose of cooking oil to help support healthy ecosystems.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

Climate + Air Weekly Meal Planning
How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

It was amazing! I was really proud of being able to stick to it, and it also made me worry a lot less about spending money throughout the week, since I already had meals planned. I came home knowing I would have food at home to eat, so I was never worried about having to buy take-out or do a surprise shopping trip. Planning out my food, while initially being stressful, helped give me an ease of mind in the long term.

Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

For zero waste day, I made sure to follow 3 criteria:
    1. Don't overbuy in the store - buy only what you need to prevent spoilage.
    2. Don't use throw away, single use plastics.
    3. Whatever you use, you use up completely.
I made sure to cook in a single portion - only cook what I knew I could eat regularly. I made dishes that created little to no waste. I didn't go out to eat or buy anything extra. For a singular day it isn't too hard to do, but I can imagine trying to do a zero waste challenge for a week is quite difficult.

Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

Last weekend I went to Mori Point over in Pacifica to check out the wildflowers this season, but today I decided to take time to get to know my neighborhood more. I walked around streets I hadn't bothered to look at before. I found a lot of houses with fun, interesting gardens (some with a lot of wildflowers and a lawn, others with lots of orchids and potted plants). I got to know the type of neighborhood I live in more, and see what kind of things people prioritize in their homes :-).

Climate + Air Low Carbon Diet
Which high carbon foods will you eat less of, and what are some low carbon options you'll choose instead?

This activity goes hand in hand with my food planning activity I'll be working on over the weekend. I am thinking on going on a pescatarian diet next week, and buying local produce to reduce carbon emissions from transportation. I'm lucky to live in a place where I can eat freshly caught fish, and will be incorporating that into my meals this week. Fish is one of the best meats to eat when thinking of more environmentally friendly alternatives if you still want to eat meat.

My ceanothus (mountain lilac) bush is a California native, and is a wonderful addition to the garden when it comes to attracting pollinators because of its brightly colored flowers, and the fact that it's a hardy shrub that stays for many years and flowers seasonally with hundreds of flowers!
