Debbi's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Leave No Trace

I will respect and protect biotic communities by practicing the seven principles of Leave No Trace whenever I am outside.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 240 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Dishwasher Efficiency

Hand washing dishes can use more energy and hot water than a dishwasher. To save water, I will use a dishwasher and scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

We walked the area surrounding our home location which is two state parks and a large cemetery. We used our exploration to complete another task of picking up trash as we went along. We met a few people as we walked, some thanked us for picking up the trash. The area is beautiful and full of wildlife and birds. We are proud of our community and will continue to explore and take care of it.

How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

We took a walk along the two parks and cemetery that border our residence picking up the trash as we went. We were asked by a few why we were doing this and who we were with. We explained and were rewarded with thanks, that is how it connects us to our community.

How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

I feel education is the best approach for and region/household to prepare for the changing water situations. If people know what is happening, understand the direct effect on them and their immediate environment, most will become actively involved.

My husband and I work opposite hours, so our meals are separate, it has been so complicated trying to create a healthy meal plan for both of us, that is not time-consuming or expensive. During this challenge we discovered a step up to meal planning. We each choose two meals that are healthy and can be cooked ahead, we cook them all on Sunday and place in containers. Then each day/night we have healthy good meals just waiting to be heated up. It was cheaper to buy the fresh vegetables and protein for the 7 cook ahead meals that it ever would be for a delivery; and we saved so much in other ways, no cardboard from pre-packaged meals, no gas for deliveries, no Styrofoam or plastic. Most of all we feel pretty amazing about this change.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

I have learned that the average person uses approximately 310 pounds of plastic a year. I have purchased a Yeti and Nalgene water bottles for daily use and hiking trips, and I have started to replace the plastic storage containers in my home with alternative solutions.

How did it feel to plan out your meals and stick to them in an effort to reduce food waste?

I bought fresh vegetables and protein from a local farm, put together my lunches and dinners for the entire week. Not only have I saved approximately $100 in take out; but the plastic take out containers, plastic wrapped Styrofoam and gas saved is huge.

Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

The Oceans and removing harmful contaminants from the waters. I am dumbfounded by the amount of garbage in the planets oceans, seas, and waterways. Some beaches now have sand that is made of small bits of plastic versus actual sand.

My name is Debbi and I've always been an earthy crunchy tree-hugging outdoorsy kind of gal. We cannot force anyone to care about our planets needs; however, we can step fully to the plate and hold ourselves accountable and do our best to educate those who would listen. I chose my actions based on personal growth and improvements that I can carry forward for a lifetime.
