Michele's actions

Action Track: Community

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 2 hours in my community.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species. I will spend 5 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Endangered Species

Wildlife and biodiversity play an important role on our planet and are being threatened each year. I will spend 10 minutes each day learning about the current status of local or global wildlife and how I can align my actions to support their livelihood.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I finish this month's Ecochallenge as an outlaw, LOL. Some of you may have seen my post from a few weeks ago where I cleaned up a trail, posted some "please don't litter your cigarette butts" signs, and placed a sand bucket for people to put their cancer sticks out in. I returned today to find that everything was gone. It must be the Park & Rec department because vandals wouldn't have taken the time to remove/dispose of everything - especially the sand bucket which was really heavy! I wonder... are they looking for who left these things on public property?! My fingerprints and DNA are all over that stuff! :-)

Oh well... I hope I still had an influence on people since everything was there for a least 10 days. Today I saw considerably fewer cigarette butts littered. Plus people watched me doing the clean-up, and I hope that put some ideas in their head. Like... don't just walk past what you see, do something about it!

As always, the Ecochallenge has been lots of fun, and very inspirational. I am passionate about all of this, but participating and sharing ideas and wins with like-minded people is especially motivating. Thank you to EVERYBODY for all that you do!! Keep up the good work.

      I love that story, that's commitment !
Maybe you can petition the city to have a cigarette disposal officially installed?

I committed to recording a video to share my "WHY" for participating in the Ecochallenge. Scuba diving is my passion; I love marine wildlife. Here is a link to a short video compilation; a few clips from a recent trip to a small Fijian island called Beqa. What I want to share is the incredible beauty of the underwater world so that more people will see it's worth protecting. It appears to be downsampled by Google but I hope you can still get an idea.

During this trip, I was only trying to capture the pretty stuff so I didn't record the barren and damaged areas of the reef. The top of the coral bommies you see in the video were GORGEOUS (to a depth of about 40') but down below and between these bommies it was sad. Compared to a trip we took to Fiji about 6 years ago, this time we saw virtually no larger fish. No grouper, trevally, or some of the larger schooling fish like barracuda or tuna. It was apparent the waters have been overfished. Additionally, we used to see sharks on almost every dive - a sign of a healthy reef. The only sharks we saw on this trip were coaxed to the area for a specially arranged excursion - a "shark dive" - in which sharks are fed scraps (one clip included here).

My message is that the ocean is an amazingly beautiful place that we can't take for granted. We need to limit what we pull out of it or there won't be anything left. Our population growth is seriously taxing it. We need to prioritize dealing with the climate crisis to keep coral reefs healthy. 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean. An estimated 3 billion people rely on seafood as a significant source of animal protein, and 10-12 percent of the world's population depends on fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihood. Thank goodness for movements like the Ecochallenge to inspire activism!

Discovery dive! I'm so happy to hear that, Jacqui. I always tell people who ask... scuba isn't for everyone (some fear the water, especially the ocean) but if it interests you, don't hesitate!! It's truly the most amazing thing I've ever done and my husband feels the same. So easy to forget how much of our world is under water. I have so enjoyed exploring it and advocating to protect it. You can share with Bodhi that I have almost 300 dives under my belt since I got certified 12 years ago (a small number compared to many divers) and I have never once been afraid of anything I've encountered; just fascinated. I feel like I would have been missing out on something huge had I not gotten into diving. Our personal website has a music video (or at least some clips) for every trip we've taken and we've been to Cozumel 5 times (it's our home away from home) https://scubadiving.rocks/ In case he wants to watch some. Word of warning, there is some language in my husband's blog posts since we only maintain the website to share with friends, and he has quite the sense of humor. ;-)

thank you Michele -- your love of the oceans and passion for sharing the beauty as well as your dedication to education inspire me. I hope we can help the young ones fall in love with the earth and reweave themselves in a way that rights the messes we have made. I went on a discovery dive with Bodhi this week and he is fired up to get SCUBA certification as soon as he is old enough. I will share your message and lessons with him and brainstorm together about how we can help.

I did a big trail cleanup earlier this week and returned to see the fruits of my labor. Generally, it was good. A few people had used the sand-filled bucket I left for butts (even though smoking is prohibited, people are still doing it). There were a few butts and pieces of litter in the bucket. While walking my dog I picked up any new butts on the ground and was frustrated to see 10 of the same brand - likely the same person. After being thanked by one passerby on cleanup day, she told me there is one man that walks the trail frequently and drops butts all the time. I created a new sign to post in a few places along the trail with a stronger message, directed at the offenders. I just got them laminated and will post soon. I have to at least try to get through to them!

Thanks, Ann. I am pessimistic myself but even just creating the sign helped me to vent a little. I'm also hoping that since several people stopped to thank me on cleanup day, maybe others will be inspired to say something if they see littering happen. Fingers crossed, but I'm not holding my breath. :-(

I applaud your efforts and will keep my pessimism to myself. I hope the offenders are able to see your message, understand the error of their ways and "turn over a new leaf"! Keep fighting the good fight!

Today I learned about columbines native to North America and specifically my area - Oregon. I'm not sure if this one is the Oregon native Aquilegia formosa. The seeds were harvested in North Plains on my friend's property. These plants pop up and flower in gorgeous colors of purple, blue, and cranberry. I absolutely love them, and so do the pollinators! I have collected seeds from my plants and shared them with friends. They're a big hit!

Today was huge! I spent about 2 hours early this morning, cleaning up along a trail that was horribly littered with cigarette butts. According to my Fitbit, about 3.5 miles in steps, and I can't even guess how many butts I picked up. Hundreds. Then I deployed some laminated signs and a sand-filled bucket I prepared over the weekend (I'll get a cat litter scoop and check on the bucket from time to time). Three people stopped and thanked me. I saw others taking pictures of my silly signs, LOL. I'm very curious to see if things improve as I continue to walk this trail with my buddy, Frankie, weekly. Let's call it a social experiment with ecological promise. Fingers crossed!!

Land + Forests Explore My Area
Where did you go for your walk or hike in nature? What were the benefits of doing so?

I ventured into the field next to an elementary school; it had been many years since I walked there. So relaxing! It's very pretty; bordered by trees, the grass dappled with daisies and dandelions. While my partner Frankie romped around, I picked up all the litter I could find, so the kids will return to a nicer play area on Monday.

Picked up lots of litter on my walk today; mostly small things that get overlooked but will run into a storm drain... and into our waterways and ocean. Cigarette butts, small pieces of plastic, candy wrappers, etc. It's easy to overlook these things and the Ecochallenge is a good reminder of not just what we should do this month, but every month.

This weekend I collected starts of mint, bearded iris, sedge grass, and black-eyed susan from my garden (about 15 plants total) and donated them along with many extra pots to our library's annual plant sale. I love nurturing plants, and helping a good cause feels very worthwhile. It always amazes me that you could spend a lot of money at the nursery or simply take from existing plants to create new plantings! I hope a lot of shoppers at the plant sale will enjoy these beauties. :-)

what a beautiful gift -- and that's wonderful that your library has a plant sale!! A student in my botany class shared that her library used to have a plant exchange and a seed bank.

My local library has used books sales - which we often join - but no plant sales yet. I will suggest that!

Freshwater + Oceans Understand My Water Footprint
What did you learn about your water footprint and what are you going to do to reduce and be aware of the water you use?

    Michele Wittig's avatar
    Michele Wittig 4/11/2024 3:03 PM
Calculating my water footprint was eye-opening! I had no idea how much water is included in my footprint beyond what I use in my house and yard. Fuel plus production of my food and my pet's food accounts for A LOT! I beat the national average by 200 gallons a day but my total was still estimated at 1600 gallons a day for just me! I'll definitely keep a closer eye on what we use, and highly recommend everyone doing the water footprint calculator. It's super easy, intuitive, fast, and very revealing.
