Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Seek Alternative Gifts and Souvenirs

When traveling, I will seek souvenirs that support local communities and do not cause harm to the environment or wildlife.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 120 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

COMPLETED 28
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate + Air

Use Muscle Power

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Personal Waste Audit
What are the results of your waste audit and what did you learn? How can you reduce your waste going forward?

    SAIPRANAV VENGALA 4/30/2024 7:49 AM
Waste audit, a reckoning of our material excesses! Here’s what I discovered:
    1. Excessive Packaging: My trash bin overflowed with wrappers, clamshell containers, and layers of plastic. Each crinkle whispered, “We’re choking the Earth.”
    2. Plastic Parade: The ghosts of single-use plastics danced—straws, bags, utensils. Their afterlife? Landfills and oceans.
    3. Discarded Dreams: Broken gadgets, forgotten toys, and faded paper—each held memories, now discarded. I wondered, “What legacy do we leave?”

    Going Forward
    :
    • Embrace Reusables: Swap disposable for durable. Stainless steel straws, cloth bags, and refillable containers—they’re my allies now.
    • Compost Whispers: My kitchen hums with compost bins. Food scraps become soil, a silent pact with Mother Earth.
    • Gratitude Ritual: Before tossing anything, I pause. “Thank you,” I whisper. Gratefulness softens the edges of waste.

Forests, those ancient guardians of the Earth, cradle more than mere oxygen. For me, they whisper secrets of solace and renewal. Their lush foliage shelters elusive creatures, their canopy a refuge for dreams. In their silence, I find my own rhythm—a sanctuary where my soul dances with the wind. 🌳🌿

Freshwater + Oceans Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning
What did you learn about ingredients in our cleaning products and how they impact water and biodiversity? Did you try making your own cleaning products? If so, how did it go?

    SAIPRANAV VENGALA's avatar
    SAIPRANAV VENGALA 4/30/2024 7:44 AM
Cleaning products often contain harmful chemicals that can adversely affect water quality and biodiversity. Ingredients like phosphates, chlorine, and surfactants can end up in water bodies, disrupting ecosystems. I haven’t personally made cleaning products, but DIY alternatives using vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils are eco-friendly and effective. 🌿💧

    1. Energy-Efficient Appliances: Invest in energy-efficient appliances like LED bulbs, smart thermostats, and Energy Star-rated devices. These consume less power and save you money.
    2. Unplug Devices: Unplug chargers, electronics, and appliances when not in use. Even in standby mode, they draw power.
    3. Air Conditioning and Heating: Set your thermostat to an optimal temperature. Use natural ventilation during mild weather to reduce reliance on AC or heaters.
    4. Seal Leaks: Insulate doors and windows to prevent drafts and maintain indoor temperatures efficiently.
    5. Solar Panels (if feasible): Consider installing solar panels on your rooftop. They generate clean energy and can significantly reduce your electricity bill.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Biodiversity + Wildlife Plastic in Clothing and Water
How did you try to catch the release of microplastics in your laundry? What did you learn in the process?

    SAIPRANAV VENGALA's avatar
    SAIPRANAV VENGALA 4/30/2024 7:41 AM
When we launder clothes, they shed microfibers that eventually end up in our wastewater and contribute to global plastic pollution. To mitigate this issue, we must explore sustainable laundry practices and consider using filters or specialized bags to capture microfibers before they escape into the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    SAIPRANAV VENGALA's avatar
    SAIPRANAV VENGALA 4/30/2024 3:49 AM
Having a Zero Waste Day was both enlightening and challenging. Here’s what I discovered about myself and my habits:
    1. Challenges:
      • Packaging: Avoiding single-use plastics and excessive packaging was tough. Even seemingly innocent items like tea bags or snack wrappers added up.
      • Convenience vs. Sustainability: Opting for reusable items required planning and sometimes inconvenience. For instance, carrying a reusable water bottle instead of grabbing a disposable one on the go.
      • Mindful Choices: Breaking the habit of mindlessly tossing things into the trash was a mental shift. I had to pause and consider alternatives.
    2. Self-Reflection:
      • Awareness: I realized how much waste I generate unconsciously. It made me more mindful of my daily choices.
      • Priorities: I questioned what truly matters. Convenience or the health of our planet? It’s a balance I need to strike.

In the end, it’s about progress, not perfection. I’ll continue making small changes to reduce my waste footprint. 🌿♻️
