Geert's actions

Freshwater + Oceans

Low Water Gardening

Grass lawns are water-intensive and on average require about 30 percent of a household’s water consumption. Native plants are water-efficient and help maintain the balance and diversity of local ecosystems. I will plant native species with water-efficient plants to conserve water and improve the habitat, then post a photo on the feed to share.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper

Trees provide food and habitat for local wildlife species, shade our streets and homes, and help keep our air and water clean by capturing pollutants. Buying products that help protect forests makes a difference. I will only purchase wood, furniture, and paper products from ecologically certified sources such as Forest Stewardship Council.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Carry My Trash

I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me this month, to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will post on the feed my reflections, conversations, and actions I will take moving forward.

COMPLETED 22
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Compost Food Waste

Food in the landfill is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses. I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill per day by composting my food.

COMPLETED 25
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Invest in Nature

A healthy world needs both our daily actions and support from larger systems. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how I can use my investments and savings to advance environmental sustainability.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Sustainable shopping

For my daily shopping tasks, I leave my car home and walk to the shop. This basic action has a possitive impact on our environment, for sure if we do this on a daily base. So raining or not, make your daily walk to the bakery (your 30 minutes walk) don't spoil are fresh air by using a car and refuse the platic bag for the bread... Win Win ;-)

Action Track: Community

TAKE PICTURES AND SHARE ON LINKEDIN

I will take at least one photograph that is connected with this year's theme of Nature Conservation & Biodiversity (for example an urban park, bee hives, birds and other animals...) and I will post it on LinkedIn with the hashtags #EarthMonthEcochallenge #EarthMonthAtEmerson.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

ATTEND THE ECOCHALLENGE CONSERVATION WEBINAR

On Wed 24th April, I will attend the Earth Month Ecochallenge Webinar on Conservation to learn about what individuals, companies and other organizations can do to promote biodiversity and nature protection.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Community

Plant Trees

Trees capture carbon and produce oxygen that is essential to life on earth. I will support this important piece of nature by organizing or joining a community group to plant 2 native trees in my community, public parks, office location, campus or backyard.

On the last day of this ECOCHALLENGE 2024, I would like to conclude with an impression of this impressive month. The photo shows a beautiful Viburnum Opulus, also called Snowball. The composite flower symbolizes our collective contribution to the benefit of our environment. White is also the color of new beginnings, every day there are new opportunities to do better than the day before. White is also the color of light and the belief that it is not yet too late. All the snowballs on the bush correspond to all the actions we have taken. The impact we have achieved can be compared to an avalanche of snowballs...
Miraculously, this shrub has been in bloom the entire month of April. Thank you everyone for your efforts and results. Thank you Anca Laslau for bringing me on board to this fantastic team.

Thank you, Geert, for your open-mindedness and dedication to the EcoChallenge! Your words really resonated with me, especially "do better than the day before." I'll carry that with me today and strive to make positive changes.

Thank you, Geert, for your inspiring words! The Snowball bush, blooming throughout April, beautifully symbolizes our collective efforts and the impact of our actions, much like an avalanche of change. Each day offers a fresh start to strengthen our commitment to the planet. I appreciate your leadership and am grateful to be part of this dedicated team. 🌿 🌳 🌍

Thinking out of the box can help us more by doing less...
Instead of planting trees, we can also give territory back to nature.
After a few years, without human intervention, a young forest with native vegetation will emerge on a fallow field. It has been proven that nature can do this better than us.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Carry My Trash
This is no small task! What was eye-opening to you throughout this action? How will you change your actions going forward to reduce the waste you produce?

    Geert Van Cauter's avatar
Geert Van Cauter 4/29/2024 7:01 AM
Instead of taking the old items to the recycling park after the big cleaning, we give these items to people who can still use them. We give it a second life...

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Geert Van Cauter's avatar
Geert Van Cauter 4/29/2024 6:52 AM
By thinking about what you do with plastic, you can find good solutions to reduce its use.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Geert Van Cauter's avatar
Geert Van Cauter 4/29/2024 6:35 AM
By using compost in spring or autumn, you offer your plants many benefits and you also take important steps towards a more drought- and heat-resistant garden in the summer.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Low Water Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

    Geert Van Cauter's avatar
Geert Van Cauter 4/28/2024 12:56 PM
In the summer months there is insufficient rainwater. That's why I have an underground cistern to bridge these periods of gestation.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Choose Eco-Friendly Wood and Paper
Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Geert Van Cauter's avatar
Geert Van Cauter 4/25/2024 2:41 AM
The forest has so much more to offer. It is the habitat of many animals and plants, but also the oxygen lung and thermostat of our planet. Stop the cutting and burning of the driving force behind our existence!

When I was a child we travelled to Italy because of the nice weather and the beautiful nature. I was impressed to see lemon trees and palmtrees gowing in this meditarian climate. Now 40 years later I raise these plants easily in my own garden in Belgium... Why I am joining this challenge? Because I want to do something against climate change! Knowing we all started acting most probably much to late ... :-(

In the garden, pruning waste from trees and hedges is chopped into beautiful wood chips. They will make the potted plants more beautiful, protect the soil from drying out, provide a shelter for small insects and, after composting, also provide natural nutrients for the plant!
